Wooster, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team shot 50% from the floor and 58.3% from three-point range on its way to a 67-47 victory over Bethany College at the Nan Nichols Classic on Sunday afternoon.
The Yeowomen opened the game on a 15-2 run due in part to seven points from
Sammy Spanier but the Bison weathered the run and knocked down a pair of free throws in the final minute of the quarter to trim the deficit to single digits at 21-12 heading to the second.
Bethany got as close as four, 21-17, just over a minute into the second quarter but Oberlin responded with a 10-0 run which included triples from
Ally Driscoll and
Cheyenne Arthur to give the Yeowomen a 31-17 lead with 5:24 remaining until the half.
The Bison would sink five free throws in the final two minutes of the quarter to again cut the margin under 10 at 36-27 after 20 minutes of play.
A pair of
Jasmine Sorrells made buckets gave the Yeowomen a 40-29 advantage early in the third quarter before a five-point spurt by Spanier pushed the lead to 15, 54-39, with 2:08 remaining in the quarter. Arthur knocked down a pair of free throws with two seconds left to send Oberlin to the fourth with a healthy 56-41 lead.
The Yeowomen defense held the Bison to just six points in the final 10 minutes as buckets by
Tyler Collins and
Jasmine Roberts ballooned the lead to over 20 points on the way to a 67-47 Oberlin victory.
Four players were in double-digits for the Yeowomen as Spanier, Sorrells and Collins each recorded 12 points with Arthur notching 11. Spanier, who was named to the all-tournament team, orchestrated the offense with her six assists while Driscoll added nine points and seven boards.
The Oberlin defense forced Bethany to shoot just 21.1% from the field as they allowed only eight points in the paint, thanks in part to seven blocks by Sorrells.
The Yeowomen head to Indiana on Wednesday, November 20th for a 7:30 p.m. tip against Trine.
