Angola, IN – The 11
th ranked Thunder of Trine University proved to be too tough of a challenge for the Oberlin College women's basketball team as they downed the Yeowomen, 63-31, on Wednesday night.
Oberlin's season-long shooting struggles continued on this night with just 11 makes on 48 attempts for a 22.9 percent success rate. No Yeowoman reached double figures in the game as
Sammy Spanier led the way with nine points, while
Cheyenne Arthur chipped in with seven.
Oberlin jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the early going but would net just four points over the final 7:23 of the first quarter as the Thunder led 14-11 after the opening 10-minute session.
The Yeowomen dry spell would carry well into the second quarter as they went scoreless for over six minutes. A Spanier jumper with 3:49 left in the opening half finally stopped the drought to make it a 19-13 Thunder lead. However, Trine would continue to increase its cushion from there, carrying a 26-17 advantage into the intermission.
A 3-pointer from Arthur started the third quarter but another prolonged scoreless stretch that lasted over seven minutes allowed the Thunder to build up a 37-20 lead with less than four minutes to go in the period.
Oberlin would never threaten in the final frame as the Thunder continued to balloon the lead en route to moving to 2-1 on the year. The loss dropped the Yeowomen back to 1-3 on the young season.
The Yeowomen will take to the Philips Gym floor for the first time this season on Saturday afternoon as they welcome Bluffton University. Tip-time is set for 1 p.m.
