Gators Rally to Sour Senior Day for the Yeomen

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College football team dropped its 2019 season finale to the visiting Allegheny College Gators, 31-20, on Saturday afternoon at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.

Prior to the game the Yeomen honored their 10 senior members: Von Wooding, Devin White, Zach Taylor, Melvin Briggs, Jabree Hason, Jubreel Hason, Andrew Puchala, Jack Lesniak, Jason Hewitt, and Justin Godfrey.

Kobe Brooks led the Yeomen offense with 94 yards rushing on 23 carries, while quarterback Chris Allen Jr. finished 18-of-37 with two touchdowns and one interception. Brandon Davies paced the pass catching corps with 47 yards on four receptions. Making his first-career start, rookie Mason LeVasseur guided the Yeomen defense with 10 tackles.

The Yeomen got off to a quick start, taking an early 7-0 lead following a Gators' miscue. An errant snap on a punt attempt setup the Yeomen up just outside the red zone and five plays later Allen Jr. connected with freshman Bear Broyles for a 6-yard scoring strike to mark his first-career TD catch.

Later in the quarter, Jabree Hason stepped in front of a Nazareth Greer pass on the near sideline and returned it 47 yards down to the Gators' 18-yard line. However, the Yeomen would ultimately have to settle for a 33-yard Christian Arnold field goal.

The two foes would trade second-quarter field goals with Arnold connecting on a career-long 40-yard attempt to cap off a 12-play, 37-yard drive that took 6:54 off the clock and gave Oberlin a 13-3 halftime lead.

Unfortunately for the Yeomen it was a different story in the second half as the Gators immediately got a boost of energy on a 75-yard punt return touchdown by Alex Victor early in the third quarter.

After a quick three-and-out by Oberlin, the Gators wasted no time taking the lead as a busted coverage by the Yeomen led to a 69-yard catch-and-run touchdown for Dwaine Barber and a 17-13 Allegheny lead.

Midway through the third quarter, Wooding forced Gators' running back Tonye Hamilton to fumble deep in his own territory and Jarrett Smith was there to fall on it at the 14-yard line. A penalty had the Yeomen backed up to the 24, but on third down, Allen Jr. hit Davies scampering along the near sideline and he tipped-toed his way into the end zone to reclaim the lead for Oberlin at 20-17.

However, the final points of the quarter would come on a pop-pass from Austin French to Victor as he raced around the outside and into the end zone from a yard out.

The Gators would complete the game's scoring early in the fourth quarter. Following an interception by Jake Fedell on a screen pass, Greer would immediately go the air on the ensuing play and find Joe Hayes from 17 yards out to make it a two score game.

The Yeomen offense never threatened the rest of the way as the Gators capped off a 4-6 season while Oberlin concluded its 2019 campaign at 1-9.

Oberlin will begin its preparations for the 2020 season during its non-traditional practice period in April.
