Oberlin Invite Two Results
Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's tennis team concluded the fall portion of its schedule over the weekend with select members competing at the ITA Central Regional Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan, while others played in the Oberlin Invite No. 2 on Sunday.
At the ITA regional, senior
Stephen Gruppuso earned a seeded position and won his first match with relative ease over Illinois Wesleyan's Dylan Mikaili by a 6-0, 6-1 scoreline in the round of 64. However, he was eliminated from the event in the following round by University of Chicago's Joshua Xu who upended the Yeomen ace by matching 6-2 counts.
Gruppuso and senior classmate
Camron Cohen were 8-5 winners in the round of 32 doubles against John Devito and Michael Hall of Wittenberg before losing to a pair from Case Western in the next round. On Sunday at the Oberlin Invite, the pair regrouped to win 6-0, 7-5 over the Spartans' pairing of Anthony Kanamand John Kasner. Cohen also added a singles win on Sunday, gutting out an 8-7 (9-7) win over Andy Siciliano of John Carroll University.
In his first ITA experience, freshman
Sean Billerbeck won his opening round match against Denison's Jacob Dennen 6-1, 6-4. The rookie added two more victories to his ledger on Sunday with an 8-1 over JCU's Aditya Jha and a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Nivaan Lobo of Wooster.
James Dill and
Elliot Nuss won two doubles matches at the ITA's, taking down Trine's Sid Petersen and Evan Trusty 8-2 before besting Allegheny's Wonjoon Cho and Cooper Miller 8-6 in the consolation round. Nuss added an 8-2 Sunday win in singles against the Blue Streaks' Mark Beebe.
During the Oberlin Invite,
Nathan Silverstein was a 9-8 (9-7) winner over JCU's Ram Kumar, while
Zachary Vaughn (8-4 vs. Doug Moore) and
Sam Topper (8-1 vs. Andrew Triner) also added wins against Blue Streak players.
The Yeomen will now rest up for the winter before returning to action on February 1 against nationally ranked Carnegie Mellon and Division II Ashland.
