Yeowomen Fall to Golden Tornadoes in Three Sets

Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania – The Oberlin College volleyball team lost in straight sets to Geneva College on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Golden Tornadoes sped out to a 10-3 lead in the first set before kills by McLean Sammon and Jaya Flynn-Young cut the deficit to two at 11-9. Errors by Oberlin gave Geneva three consecutive points on their way to opening a five-point advantage at 19-14. The Yeowomen would respond with back-to-back kills by Natasha Radic and Flynn-Young to stay within striking distance at 21-17 but the Golden Tornadoes rattled off the last four points to take the opening set 25-17.
 
Samantha Lam set up Emery Beacom for a kill to give Oberlin a slight lead at 12-11 in the second set. The teams would trade points for a minute before a Geneva took three straight points with a kill, service ace and attack error to take a slim 17-14 lead. A Lauren Fitts kill held the margin at three before three more kills by the Golden Tornadoes gave them their largest lead of the set at 22-16. Oberlin would trim the deficit back to four but Geneva closed out the set with a kill to win the second set 25-20.
 
Geneva flew out to a quick 5-0 lead in the third before opening up a seven-point advantage at 10-3. Oberlin answered back with kills by Sammon and Flynn-Young to pull within two at 11-9 while a Golden Tornadoes ball handling error got the Yeowomen within one at 15-14. Three straight Oberlin errors pushed the Geneva advantage back to four but back-to-back kills by Radic and Flynn-Young kept the Yeowomen with reach at 21-17. The Golden Tornadoes won the next four points to close out the set 25-17 and win the match three sets to none.
 
Beacom led the offensive attack with 12 kills while Zoe Kuzbari recorded 19 digs on the defensive end.
 
The Yeowomen return home on Tuesday, October 29th when they welcome Hiram to Philips Gymnasium for a 7:00 p.m. NCAC match.
