Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College defense had five takeaways en route to earning a 7-0 win over the visiting Hiram College Terriers on Saturday afternoon at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.
Through three games on the Bailey Field turf this season, the Yeomen defenders have surrendered just nine total points with three against Kalamazoo and six against Kenyon.
Not only did Oberlin get its first win of the season but it was also six years to the day when the Yeomen posted their last shutout when they blanked the Allegheny College Gators 24-0 on October 19, 2013.
The Yeomen's stout run defense was once again on display as they held Hiram to just 33 yards on the ground. They also added eight more tackles-for-loss to run the season total to 53.
Senior
Von Wooding turned in one of his best games of the season as he finished with nine tackles, which included three for a loss, to go along with a forced fumble.
Luke Buck matched him with nine stops and an interception, while senior
Devin White had two INTs, a forced fumble, and seven tackles.
Hiram's second drive of the game went 79 yards and on 16 plays but the Yeomen defense would stop them on the goal line on third and fourth down to kept the shutout in tack.
The lone touchdown of the game would come on the Yeomen's second possession of the second quarter as freshman quarterback
Chris Allen Jr. marched them down the field 65 yards on 10 plays. He converted a big 3rd-and-10 with his legs, running for 15 yards on a scramble.
Ryan McCrum also had carries of 10 and 11 yards on the drive. The Yeomen would eventually punch it in on 3
rd-and-goal from the 5-yard line as Allen Jr. found
Ceiveon Munoz for his first-career TD toss.
The Terriers' opening drive of the second half proved promising as they drove down deep into Yeomen territory before White stripped Jacquarias Waller at the 5-yard line where
Malachi Clemons scooped it up.
The ensuing Hiram drive also ended with the ball in the Yeomen's hands as Buck stepped in front of an Xavier Reyero pass and returned it 41 yards into Hiram Territory.
The Terriers were threatening to score early in the fourth quarter but the Yeomen answered the call once again as White corralled an errant Reyero pass at the Yeomen 9-yard line to short-circuit the threat.
With under 10 minutes to go at the ball near midfield, White would bait Reyero into another bad decision and the Yeomen senior snagged his wayward pass to give the ball back to the Yeomen offense.
Unfortunately, the Yeomen would return the favor as Allen Jr. had the ball slip out of his hands while going to throw but it was ruled a fumble to give Hiram new life.
Thankfully, the Oberlin thievery continued when
Christian Arnold hauled a deep attempt by backup QB Randy Myers Jr. at the Yeomen 6-yard line to squash another scoring chance for the visitors.
The Yeomen would go on to milk the clock before giving the ball back to Hiram with just 1:08 to play, which proved to be too little of time.
Allen Jr. finished 18-of-39 passing for 171 yards. Tight end
Brandon Davies continued his impressive sophomore season as he finished with a career-best nine catches for a career-high 92 yards.
Kobe Brooks led the ground attack with 59 yards on 27 attempts.
The Yeomen will be back in action at home next Saturday against Wabash College at 1 p.m.
