Yeowomen Fall to Fighting Scots

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team fell to The College of Wooster Fighting Scots, 55-44, in Philips Gymnasium Wednesday evening.

The Yeowomen, who shot 28.3 percent on the night, were led by Olivia Canning as she recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 boards. The Sudbury, Massachusetts, native was 7-of-14 from the field and recorded five blocks on the defensive end. In addition to Canning, Ally Driscoll added seven points and Cheyenne Arthur chipped in six, finishing a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line.

A Mackenzie Michaels' basket capped the first quarter with 32 ticks left in a 14-14 stalemate.  In the second frame the Fighting Scots earned the first significant separation when Sarah Marion knocked a shot down from 3-point land with 4:11 left in the half. Two minutes later an Arthur jumper cut the deficit to three, but Wooster would score the final basket of the half to take a 25-20 advantage into halftime.

The Yeowomen faithful were hoping for a second-half comeback, but Wooster looked to put an end to that by outscoring the Yeowomen 12-7 in the third period, giving them a two-digit lead heading into the fourth. Oberlin shot just 18.8 percent in the period compared to a 36.4 percent showing from the Fighting Scots in the frame.

In the fourth, the Yeowomen scrapped their way back within eight on two occasions but would go no closer the rest of the way. Unfortunately for the Yeowomen, Wooster would go 4-of-6 from the charity stripe down the stretch to secure its first conference victory of the season.

The Yeowomen were 17-of-60 from the field, including a 1-of-13 performance from beyond the arc. Oberlin did win the battle of the boards 42-39, but the team's 18 turnovers hurt them. Wooster shot 36.5 percent (19-of-52) and were 5-of-14 (35.7 percent) from three.

The Yeowomen fall to 7-7 overall and are now 3-3 in NCAC play, while Wooster improved to 5-10 overall and 1-5 in league play.

Oberlin will look to bounce back on Saturday at Hiram College. The game is set to tip off at 1 p.m.
