Yeowomen Outlast Terriers on the Road

Hiram, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team outlasted the Hiram College Terriers by the score of 58-55 on Saturday afternoon at Price Gymnasium.

The Yeowomen used a diverse scoring attack as six different players posted six or more points in the victory. Oberlin was paced by Cheyenne Arthur who netted 13 of her game-high 16 points in the first half. Senior center Olivia Canning added nine points, six rebounds, and three blocks, while fellow post players Jasmine Sorrells and Maggie Gross chipped in eight points each and combined for 12 rebounds.

Oberlin led 16-15 at the end of the first quarter but used a 22-10 second session to gain control of the contest. The Yeowomen started the period with a 7-0 burst and later ballooned their lead out to 31-17 on an Alex Stipano triple-hit at the 4:36 mark. After being held to just two points for the first 5:45 of the stanza, four straight Hiram free throws had the Oberlin advantage down to 10. However, the Yeowomen stayed aggressive until the first-half horn and ultimately carried a 38-25 cushion into the intermission.

Unfortunately for the Yeowomen their large lead would vanish in the third quarter as the Terriers came storming back by outscoring Oberlin 19-8 in the frame. Made 3-pointers by Tyler Collins and Arthur coupled with a layup from Gross had the Yeowomen out in front 46-27 with 7:09 left to play in the session. However, Oberlin would go ice cold the rest of the way as the Terriers fought back to make it just a 46-44 Oberlin lead heading into the fourth quarter.

A Tashauna Wright jumper with 5:19 remaining in the game evened the count at 52-52 but Canning answered with a jumper of her own on the next trip down the floor and the Yeowomen would never relinquish the lead again. A pair of Ally Driscoll free throws with 79 seconds still on the clock made it a 3-point Oberlin lead and proved to be the last tallies of the game. Both teams would turn it over on their next possession, leaving the Terriers one last chance to tie it with 11 ticks to go but Gross stepped out on Wright's game-tying 3-point attempt and blocked her shot to secure the victory for the Yeowomen.

Oberlin moved over the .500 mark with the win, returning home at 8-7 overall and 4-3 in the NCAC. The Terriers dropped back to 8-8 and 2-5 in league play.

The Yeowomen, who won the rebounding battle 37-31, shot 41.5 percent (22-of-53) from the floor, which included a 7-of-18 (38.9%) showing from 3-point land. Hiram checked in at just a 34 percent shooting clip with 18 makes on 53 shots.

The Yeowomen return to action on Wednesday night when they play host to the Allegheny College Gators. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
