Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team suffered an 83-66 setback to the Allegheny College Gators on Wednesday night at Philips Gym.
The Yeomen were led by juniors
Christian Fioretti and
Andre Campbell. Fioretti led the team with 12 points to go along with his six assists, and Campbell muscled in 11 for the Crimson and Gold.
Isaac Finestone chipped in eight, while
Joshua Friedkin,
Wolf Moser and
Hunter Bleeden cashed in seven points each. Finestone, Moser and Bleeden led the bench group that scored 32 of the team's points.
In the first half, the Yeomen created some separation early when
Charles Tiedemann finished off a fastbreak to make it 18-13 at the 11:34 mark. The Gators battled back to even it at 18-18 two minutes later, and took advantage of a cold spell by the Yeomen with a 16-6 run. A
Patrick Smith 3-pointer cut it to seven before the break, but ultimately the Gators took a 38-27 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Trailing by 11, the Yeomen needed to get off to a hot start but failed to do so, allowing the Gators to build up a 20-point advantage on multiple occasions. The Yeomen fought back to within 11 points with 8:41 left to play on a 9-0 spurt but the Gators continued to hit from 3-point land and earned their largest lead of the game, 80-58, when Josh Ratesic laid the ball in with 1:51 left.
The Yeomen shot 35.4 percent (23-of-65) from the field and were 13-of-14 (92.9 percent) from the charity stripe. The Gators shot an impressive 57.7 percent (15-of-26) from distance compared to a 7-of-27 showing by the Yeomen. Overall, the Allegheny finished a solid 27-of-50 from the field for a 54 percent clip.
Oberlin falls to 5-4 halfway through the conference schedule and 9-7 overall. Allegheny is now 3-6 against NCAC opponents and 7-8 overall.
The Yeomen will look to bounce back on Saturday as they welcome the No. 25-nationally ranked Wittenberg University Tigers to town for a 2 p.m. tip.
