Yeowomen Take Down the Gators

Oberlin, Ohio – Three Oberlin College women's basketball players scored in double figures to lift the Yeowomen to a 63-50 win over the visiting Allegheny College Gators on Wednesday night at Philips Gym.

Senior Alex Stipano led the trio with 17 points while Cheyenne Arthur and Olivia Canning each added 13 tallies in the win. Canning also contributed 12 rebounds and six blocks as she notched her fourth double-double of the season and second in the last three games.

The Yeowomen raced out to a 14-2 first-quarter lead and carried a 16-5 cushion into the second quarter. The Gators would settle in and methodically worked their way back into the contest, shrinking the Oberlin advantage down to just a deuce at 21-19 with 3:33 left in the half.

Early in the third quarter the Yeowomen were clinging to a 26-25 edge but a 10-0 burst that featured a pair of threes from Stipano swelled the margin back out to 11 with five minutes to go in the session. The Gators got back within in single digits on multiple occasions but the Yeowomen ultimately carried a 42-32 lead into the final frame.

In the fourth quarter the Yeowomen would never relinquish their double-digit margin. A fast-break layup from rookie Sammy Spanier ballooned the gap out to 16 points at 58-42 with 2:33 left to play in the game to leave little doubt in the final outcome.

The Yeowomen shot 37 percent (20-of-54) from the floor but did the bulk of their damage at the charity stripe where they went 20-of-28 for a 71.4 percent success rate. The Gators matched Oberlin's 20 field goals but did so on 70 shots for a 28.6 percent clip. Allegheny also struggled at the free throw line, cashing in just four of 10 freebies.

Oberlin moved to 9-7 overall and 5-3 in the NCAC. The Gators head back home at 5-12 and 1-7 in league action.

The Yeowomen will step out of conference for their final non-league game of the season when they host the Thiel College Tomcats Friday at 7:30 p.m.
