Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College field hockey team controlled the run of play throughout the double-overtime affair against the Transylvania University Pioneers, but in the end, it wasn't enough as the visitors stole away a 1-0 victory from the Yeowomen on Saturday afternoon at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.
Oberlin outshot the Pioneers 28-6, which included 21 shots on goal. However, Transylvania goalie Allyson Benz saved everyone one of them to give her team a chance to walk-off with the victory.
An Oberlin green card left the Yeowomen playing 6-on-7 late in the second overtime and the Pioneers were able to take advantage by working the ball up field where Emma Uhls found space on the right side of the arc and lifted the game-winning shot around
Kennedy Kline in the 87
th minute.
Oberlin had a magnitude of chances to score, registering 15 shots in the second half before firing six more in the first frame of extra time.
Amelia Huang and
Libby Royer, who led the team with seven shots apiece in the match, each had promising opportunities turned away in the first overtime.
Meg Parker nearly won it the closing minutes with two shots from in tight but Benz was there to turn them away.
With both sides running on fumes, the Yeowomen did not trigger an attempt in the second half.
In addition to the large shot differential, Oberlin also had an 8-3 advantage on penalty corners.
Kline, a senior from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, finished with five saves to run her season total to 27.
The loss dropped Oberlin to 1-3 on the year, while the Pioneers moved to 1-2.
Oberlin is back in action tomorrow at 12 p.m. against Hendrix College.
