Volleyball Falls in Three at Ohio Wesleyan

Delaware, Ohio — The Oberlin College volleyball team went into Branch Rickey gym Saturday afternoon and fell to North Coast Athletic Conference foe Ohio Wesleyan University in three sets.

The Battling Bishops took the opening frame 25-12 and came back in games two and three, 25-16, 27-25, to win the match.

After dropping the opening set, the Yeowomen offense got in a rhythm early in game two and led 15-13 when Ohio Wesleyan's Amelia Richardson committed an attack error. The Battling Bishops offense came alive after that and took the next nine points en route to a 25-16 victory. The lone Yeowomen point of the stretch came from a Lauren Fitts kill.

Looking to extend the match with a third-set win, Oberlin had a 19-16 cushion when the Battling Bishops hit a ball outside the lines, but Ohio Wesleyan battled its way back again and took the decisive third set.

The Yeowomen struggled offensively as they recorded just 21 kills on their 96 attacks (.010), compared to the Battling Bishops who hit .179 as a team (36-of-106). Natasha Radic and Lexi Mitchell led the team with six kills a piece. Radic earned her six kills on just 17 swings for a hitting percentage of .176.  Sara Chang was the lone setter for Oberlin and finished the match with 15 assists.

On the defensive backline, Emily Kelkar and Mitchell led the team with six digs each. At the net, Jaya Young-Flynn led the team with two block assists.

The conference loss drops Oberlin to 4-9 overall and 0-2 against NCAC opponents. The Battling Bishops improve to 1-1 in conference play and are 7-9 on the year.

The Yeowomen are back in action on Tuesday night for a midweek conference match against The College of Wooster Fighting Scots at 4 p.m.
