Delaware, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's soccer team dropped its North Coast Athletic Conference opener, falling 1-0 at Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday night.
The victory for OWU marked the 700
th career win for Bishops' head coach Jay Martin, who is the only men's soccer coach in NCAA history to reach that milestone.
Oberlin stayed with the Bishops throughout the match, but their stiff backline didn't allow a shot on goal as all seven of the Yeomen's shot attempts were off target.
Charlie Stube and
Trenton Bulucea led the Yeomen with two shots each in the setback.
The Yeomen and Bishops were tied 0-0 at the intermission, but OWU would ultimately breakthrough in the 58
th minute when Ben Sobotka finished off a cross to the middle by Hector Gomez for his second tally of the season and lone goal of the fixture.
The Bishops peppered Yeomen keeper
Fiachra McDonagh all evening long as 11 of their 25 shots were on frame. The sophomore netminder was impressive in his return trip to the lineup after missing the last two games as he made 10 saves to run his season account to 38.
The Bishops, who drew all six offside whistles in the match, finished with an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The loss dropped the Yeomen to 0-8-0 overall and 0-1 in the NCAC. OWU moved to 5-2-0 and 1-0 in league action.
Oberlin will look for its first win of the season on Tuesday night when it steps back out of conference to take on the Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio. The first touch is set for 7 p.m.
