Yeowomen Fall to Falcons

Oberlin, Ohio — The Oberlin College field hockey team fell to the Concordia University (WI)  Falcons, 2-1, its second game on opening weekend at the Austin E. Knowlton Complex Sunday afternoon.

In the early going, Concordia held possession and would break through in the 25th minute. Gabrielle Poole tipped home a ball off a cross from Megan McPike.

After the Falcons tally, the Yeowomen pushed forward and created some good opportunities. Reet Goraya and Lea Watkins-Chow each had chances on the door step that were turned aside by Falcons keeper Katelyn Fitzgerald.

With less than two minutes in the half, the Yeowomen would get another opportunity off a penalty corner. Katie Ryan-O'Flaherty would take the corner, but the Falcons defense was up for the task.

After the break both teams got their chance and Oberlin eventually evened the score in the 56th minute. Senior Amelia Huang dribbled her way through the Falcons' defense and slapped a mid-range shot past the Concordia keeper in the top right corner to tie the game at 1-1.

Unfortunately for Oberlin, the relentless Concordia offense struck back four minutes later. McPike gathered her own rebound in front of the cage and would score the eventual game-winning goal and her fourth of the weekend.

Oberlin continued to push up field in the final 10 minutes of play, but was unable to break the Falcons back line.

Senior captain Kennedy Kline had a strong day in cage for the Yeowomen. The Philadelphia native batted away eight of the Falcons 15 shots in the contest. In addition, Meg Parker recorded a defensive save for Oberlin.

Along with Huang's goal, Emma Broun led the team with two shots on the day, both of which were on target.

The 1-1 Yeowomen will look to rebound on Wednesday as they open NCAC play against the Kenyon College Ladies with at 5 p.m. on Bailey Field.
