Wooster, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team wrapped up a busy weekend at the Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic, dropping a tight five-set affair against Pitt-Bradford before bouncing back with a straight-set victory over Franciscan.
The Yeowomen head home at 4-6 and will open North Coast Athletic Conference play against national power Wittenberg on Saturday. It will be the team's first match on the newly refinished floor at Philips Gym.
Pitt-Bradford Recap
In the first match of the afternoon, the Yeowomen went distance with the Pitt-Bradford Panthers, but finished on the wrong end of a five-set decision. After dropping the first set 25-20, Oberlin took the next two games 26-24 and 25-21. Pitt-Bradford would extend the match with a 25-20 triumph in the fourth set before outlasting the Yeowomen by four points in the race to 15, winning 15-11.
Junior
Lexi Mitchell, who was named to the all-tournament team, led the way with a career-high 29 kills on 66 swings to accompany her 18-dig effort.
Maura Gibbs continued her strong play, posting her third double-digit kill effort in the last four matches with 17 send-downs on 45 attempts with a .222 hitting percentage.
Samantha Lam and
Sara Chang had the offense in system as the duo combined for 53 assists, three aces, and 10 digs.
Along the back, senior
Emily Kelkar dug out 22 balls for a new season-high.
Franciscan Match
The Yeowomen followed up its hard-fought loss with a straight set victory against Franciscan University, 25-20, 25-15, 25-11.
Trailing 6-2 in the opening frame, the Oberlin offense came alive and went on a 8-1 run to give the Yeowomen the lead. Down the stretch Franciscan pulled the frame within two, 22-20, but the Yeowomen closed the door as Gibbs' kill clinched the set.
In the second frame, the Yeowomen jumped out to an early 8-4 lead off of one of Franciscan's nine errors in the game. The Barons pulled within two on four different occasions, but the Yeowomen cashed in on 11 of the final 15 points to take the set, 25-20.
Oberlin cruised in the decisive third, 25-11, as they held the Barons to just five kills in the final game.
Offensively, Gibbs led the way as she converted on nine her 17 attempts for a hitting percentage of .471. Mitchell led the team with 11 kills, while
Sara Chang and
McLean Sammon each added nine each. Chang and Lam ran the offense as Chang finished with 19 and Lam finished with 15.
On the other side of the net, Kelkar finished with 10 digs. The Yeowomen had six blocks as a team as
Jaya Flynn-Young,
Natasha Radic and Sammon had two.
