Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College football team fell to No. 14 Wittenberg, 45-14, on a sun-drenched Saturday afternoon at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.
The Yeomen got off to a fast start, scoring the game's first touchdown, but the Tigers took over from there, scoring 28 second-quarter points to take control of the game.
The Tigers racked up 432 yards of offense compared to the Yeomen's 296. Quarterback
Zach Taylor went 16-of-32 for 170 yards and was picked off for the first time this season as the Tigers snagged two interceptions. Taylor added 53 yards and a score on the ground. Coming off a career performance against Kenyon last week, senior running back
Chuck Williams rushed 24 times for 66 yards and a touchdown. Classmate
Jabari Clemons led the receiving corps with 69 yards on five catches, while
Miles Temoney added 44 yards on four receptions.
The Yeomen defense kept the Tigers offense bottled up throughout the opening quarter. On Wittenberg's first drive, junior
Von Wooding came through by forcing a fumble deep in Yeomen territory that was scooped up by
Luke Buck.
Setup with great field position like they were most of the afternoon, the Tigers posted the game's first points on a 37-yard field goal by Adam Acquista.
The Yeomen would answer back with an impressive 8-play, 75-yard scoring drive to take the lead. Back-to-back pass plays of 15 and 11 yards to Clemons and Temoney were followed with runs of 10 and 21 yards by Williams and Taylor. A third-down completion to
Tim Martin setup the Yeomen with a 1
st-and-goal and Williams would do the rest, running up the middle for the 5-yard touchdown.
The Yeomen carried a 7-3 lead into the second quarter, but their offense sputtered in the period while the Tigers found some rhythm thanks in part to being setup with great field position. They would break the game open with four touchdowns in the quarter, cashing in touchdown drives of 53, 25, 36 and 75 yards to carry a 31-7 lead into the halftime intermission.
The Tigers continued their offensive surge in the second half as backup quarterback Bobby Froehlich found Jeff Tiffner in the corner of the end zone midway through the third quarter. Starter Jake Kennedy would later return in the fourth and add a 3-yard TD to accompany his passing performance that featured 310 yards and four TD tosses.
Oberlin would get on the board once more with 6:44 left to play as Taylor ran in from 11 yards out to cap a 9-play, 61-yard drive that took 3:53 off the clock. The score marked the 11
th rushing TD of his career.
Wooding led the defensive effort with a game-high 12 tackles, which include one tackle for loss to go along with his forced fumble. Buck added nine stops, while
Devin White chipped in with eight.
The Yeomen are back in action at home next Saturday as they welcome the Denison University Big Red to Bailey Field for a 1 p.m. NCAC battle.
