Women’s Lacrosse Falls at Denison in Regular Season Finale

Granville, Ohio – The Denison University Big Red used a big second half to defeat the Oberlin College Yeowomen, 17-6, in the regular-season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon.

Oberlin trailed just 4-2 at the intermission, but the Big Red erupted for 13 goals in the second half to earn the victory.

Senior Sydney Garvis scored the game's first goal on a free-positon attempt, but the Big Red answered back with four tallies. The rookie combination of Ali Wessel and Tess Siciliano connected to cut the Big Red lead in half with Wessel posting her 14th tally of the season with the help of Siciliano's feed to make it a 4-2 game at the intermission.

After getting shutout in the first half, senior Natalie Rauchle netted her first of four second-half goals to make it a 6-3 Denison advantage with just under 29 minutes left to play. Unfortunately, the Big Red answered back with four straight scores to create some separation.

Rauchle halted the Big Red scoring run at the 17:33 mark and would later make it 11-5 with 11:26 left to play, but Denison would score six of the final seven goals of the game to hold off any threat of an Oberlin comeback bid. The lone Oberlin tally down the stretch came from Rauchle as she was setup by Hayley Drapkin.

Siena Marcelle turned away 15 Denison shots as the Big Red put 32 of their 43 total shots on frame. Oberlin hoisted just 20 shots with 14 on goal.

The Big Red also won the ground ball battle 28-22 and controlled the draw with a 16-9 advantage.

Denison enters the NCAC Tournament as the No. 1 seed with a 14-2 record and 8-0 mark in the NCAC. It will host No. 4 Allegheny on Wednesday night.

Oberlin, which finished the regular season 10-5 and 6-2 in the league, is the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. The Yeowomen will host No. 3 Wooster on Wednesday, May 2 at 6 p.m.
