Oberlin, Ohio – Senior
Natalie Rauchle set the single-season North Coast Athletic Conference scoring record, but it wasn't enough as the third-seeded College of Wooster Fighting Scots upset the second-seeded Yeowomen, 14-11, on Wednesday night at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.
Rauchle, a native of Edina, Minnesota, scored four goals in the game to finish her senior season with 82. She departs Oberlin as the most decorated player in school history and all-time leader in goals (216) and points (250).
The Scots opened up a 4-1 lead before the Yeowomen would settle in and overcome some early jitters. The Scots' Ashley Boersma netted the game's first goal at the 21:29 mark before Rauchle evened the count four minutes later on the first of three first-half free-position goals by the Yeowomen.
Rauchle's record-tying 80
th goal of the season came on an 8-meter attempt at the 12:16 mark to cut the Big Red lead in half at 4-2. Oberlin was later trailing 5-2, but junior
Hayley Drapkin would jumpstart a 3-0 Yeowomen response by first assisting on a
Sydney Garvis goal before posting back-to-back tallies of her own to tie the match at 5-5 with four minutes left to play in the opening session.
Unfortunately, the Yeowomen could not sustain the momentum as the Scots would tack on two more scores before the halftime horn would sound and then open the second half with four more goals to claim a 11-5 lead with 24:25 left to play.
Rauchle's record-breaking 81
st goal – which was assisted by Drapkin - would halt the Scots' 5-0 scoring run to make it 11-6 with 22:48 left to play.
The two foes would alternate the next four goals of the game with two Oberlin tallies coming courtesy of
Sabrina Deleonibus and Rauchle to make it 13-8 with just under 10 minutes remaining.
Following a yellow card to Rauchle with five minutes left, the Scots would take advantage scoring their second up-goal of the game to accompany their two person-down goals earlier in the game.
The Yeowomen would put one last run together, scoring three goals in the final 1:22, but the clock would ultimately run out on Oberlin as the Scots finished off the wire-to-wire victory.
Tess Siciliano and
Kyra Aviles found the back of the net during the late run while Deleonibus added her second tally of the game with the help of a Garvis feed.
Wooster finished with a slight 32-30 edge in shots but had a 21-9 advantage in ground balls. However, the Yeowomen won the draw control battle 18-9 as Garvis corralled seven with Rauchle adding six.
Siena Marcelle made eight of her nine saves in the first half as she played all 60 minutes between the pipes.
Oberlin ends the season at 10-6, while Wooster improved to 12-3. The Scots will play topped-seeded Denison for the NCAC title on Saturday. The Big Red beat Allegheny 24-8 in the other semifinal game.
