Gambier, Ohio – It was another tough day for the Oberlin College baseball team as the Kenyon College Lords earned their first sweep against the Yeomen since 2012 as Oberlin fell 12-6 and 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The Yeomen dropped back to 10-23 and 2-12 in the NCAC, while Kenyon kept its postseason fate alive as it now sits at 13-14 and 7-6 in league play.
In game one, Yeomen starter
Zachary Steer was staked a four-run lead before he even threw a pitch, but for the second straight start he did not have his best stuff as he could not get out of the second inning as the Lords roughed him up for six runs on seven hits in just 1.2 innings.
The Yeomen came out swinging, belting three first-inning doubles off of Lords' starter Ross Scheinberg.
Parker Goldstein started off the game with a two-base hit to the gap and right center and would score the game's first run on a
Brendan Mapes double. Senior
Milo Sklar made it a 2-0 Yeomen lead with a sac fly before
Lawrence Hamilton (single) and
Derek Martin (double) also came through with run-producing hits.
Unfortunately, the Lords responded with five hits and three runs off of Steer in the home-half of the first.
Oberlin would load the bases with one out in the second and take advantage of a Kenyon error to score two runs and push the lead to 6-3, but a two-run double by Alex Gow would ultimately chase Steer from the game. Kenyon would tack on one more run before the inning would end to tie the game, 6-6.
After the rocky start, Scheinberg would settle in as he and Will Allen combined to give up just two more Yeomen hits from the third inning on.
On the contrary the Yeomen bullpen could not keep the Lords in check.
Asher Mitchell surrendered three runs and three hits in just a third of an inning of work.
Stephen Kellner (1) and
Musa Matiwane (2) also allowed three runs over five innings.
The Lords posted three runs in the third and added single tallies in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings to cap the game's scoring.
Mapes and
Ian Dinsmore each had two hits to account for half of the Yeomen's eight hits in the game.
Senior
Sean Kiley and Kenyon's Patrick Craig were locked up in a pitcher's duel in game two, but in the end, it was the Lords who were able to scratch out a pair of runs in the seventh to defeat the Yeomen.
Oberlin's lone run of the game came in the third inning as
Sam Harris reached on an error and would come around to score on a single to right center by Goldstein.
Kiley, who posted zeros on the board through the front six innings, struck out the first two Kenyon hitters to start the seventh, but was then lifted from the game following a two-out walk to Alex Hoskins.
A single off of reliever
Noah Gear (3-2) put runners on the corners and a critical Oberlin error would not only extend the inning but allow the game-tying run to score. Head Coach
Adrian Abrahamowicz would then turn to Sklar with the hopes of keeping the game tied, but Mikey Arman hit a ball back up the middle to plate the go-ahead run.
The Yeomen would put two men on with two out in the eighth but could not push a run across. Hamilton led off the ninth with a walk, but Jesse Bogacz proceeded to strikeout the side from there to preserve the win as he and Craig combined to fan 12 Yeomen hitters in the game.
Kiley allowed just four hits, one walk, and one unearned run over 6.2 innings of work. The Studio City, California, native also recorded five punchouts to run his season total to 49.
Craig (2-2) sprinkled six hits over seven innings, allowing one unearned run, and one walk while striking out seven.
The Yeomen have a short turnaround as they head to Heidelberg University on Monday for a 4 p.m. contest.
