Tiffin, Ohio — The Oberlin College baseball team fell to the Heidelberg University Student Princes, 29-13, in a non-conference game at Peaceful Valley.
The Yeomen offense got off to the start they wanted as a solo homer off the bat of
Brendan Mapes gave Oberlin an early 1-0 lead. After the Student Princes plated a run in the home half, Oberlin manufactured a run in the second and scored another in the third off a
Quin Butler RBI single through the right side.
Unfortunately for Oberlin the Heidelberg offense erupted for nine runs in the second, eight in third and three in the fourth to blow the game open. The Yeomen defense committed six errors in the three-inning stretch, which helped the Student Princes build a 21-3 lead after four innings of play.
Despite the large deficit Oberlin kept fighting, as they scored three runs in the fifth.
Lawrence Hamilton hit a two RBI single and
Ian Dinsmore followed that up with a RBI single.
After the Student Princes got two of those runs back in the bottom of the inning, the Yeomen offense scored seven runs off four hits to cut the Heidelberg lead to 10 runs, 23-13.

Jack Derwin and Mapes each drove home runs in the big inning.
The 10-run deficit was the closest the Yeomen got to evening the score as the Student Princes responded with six more runs in the bottom of the sixth to close out the scoring.
Oberlin had nine different players pitch in the game. Starter
Jack Reiss made it 1.1 innings before allowing four hits and six runs.
At the plate Oberlin earned 15 hits. The Yeomen offense was led by Mapes and Butler finished the day 3-for-3. Mapes led the team with three RBI's.
Ben Reed, Hamilton,
Andrew Sugarman and Dinsmore also recorded two hits in the game.
The loss drops the Yeomen to 10-24 overall and Heidelberg goes to 24-13 on the year.
The Yeomen have a day off before heading to Granville, Ohio to face the Denison University Big Red. Game one is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
