Sutherland Scores Game-Winner at DePauw

Greencastle, Indiana — Senior John Sutherland capped off his Oberlin College men's lacrosse career as he scored a game-winning goal with 35 seconds remaining off a feed from classmate Steve Kelleher to earn the Yeomen a, 14-13, victory at DePauw University Saturday afternoon.

The Yeomen led 10-6 at halftime, but the Tigers clawed their way back in the second half. DePauw outscored Oberlin 6-2 to even the score, 12-12, when Steen Jorgensen beat the Yeomen goalkeeper with 7:02 left to play.

Senior Reese Koburov scored an unassisted goal to get the Yeomen the lead back with 4:32 left, but Jorgensen answered right back as he scored off the ensuing face-off to knot the game at 13 a piece, which set up the dramatic finish.

In the first half, the Tigers jumped out to an early 5-1 lead when William Dorger scored with 6:47 left in the first quarter. The Yeomen answered the early DePauw surge as they went on a 9-1 run to close out the first half. Freshman Tom Decker earned all four of his points in the stretch the gave Oberlin a 10-6 halftime lead.

On the stat sheet, Sutherland led the team with his five-goal performance as he finished his career with 37 goals in the crimson and gold. Along with Sutherland, Decker scored three goals and added one assist. Senior Ian McCague was the other Oberlin multi-goal scorer as he netted two in his final collegiate game.

Overall, the Yeomen out-shot the Tigers 39-36 with both teams putting 22 shots on target. Oberlin won 17 of the 30 face-offs as freshman face-off specialist Max McAllister won 16-of-26.

Sophomore goalkeeper Calvin Filson earned his 13th career victory as he played all 60 minutes in goal. The Williamstown, Massachusetts faced 36 DePauw shots and made eight saves.

Despite the loss, DePauw will be the No. 4-seed in the NCAC Tournament next week with a conference mark of 4-4 and overall record of 7-10. The Tigers will face powerhouse Ohio Wesleyan University at 7 p.m on Wednesday evening.

The Yeomen finish the year with an 8-7 overall record and were 3-5 in NCAC play. Oberlin will bid farewell to its nine seniors and begins preparing for the 2019 season next fall.
