Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's lacrosse team ran its winning streak to five by earning a 16-4 victory over the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops on Tuesday night at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.
North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year candidate
Natalie Rauchle led the Oberlin attack with six goals and two assists, while
Sydney Garvis and
Eliza Amber each found the back of the net two times in the victory.
The Yeowomen were also stingy in transition as their defensive midfield held the Bishops to just 17 clears on 28 tries.
Goals by Amber,
Leah Crowther, and Rauchle stacked Oberlin to an early 3-0 lead before the Bishops got on the board. Following an OWU response-goal by Paige Ross, Rauchle won the ensuing draw control and sliced her through a plethora of Bishop defenders before depositing her second score of the game with 13:41 left to play in the first half.
Oberlin was later clinging to a 4-2 cushion but would go on to score three of the final four goals of the period to take an 8-3 lead into the intermission. First-year
Kyra Aviles had a slashing finish through the arc, while Rauchle added two more tallies before the first-half horn.
The two foes traded goals to start the second as a goal by Garvis was answered by one from Megan McElgunn. However, the Yeowomen would go on to score the final eight goals of the game over the final 27:25 of the game while blanking the Bishops the rest of the way.
During the scoring run,
Ali Wessel,
Josephine An,
Tess Siciliano, and
Sabrina Deleonibus all netted a goal.
Amber led Oberlin with four ground balls and matched
Emily Berner with three caused turnovers.
The Yeowomen won 18 of the game's 22 draw controls with Garvis leading the way eight, while Amber added six.
Siena Marcelle played between the pipes in the first half and made three saves before giving way to rookie
Maranda Phillips in the second session as she recorded two denials.
The win ran the Yeowomen's record to 9-3 overall as they remained a perfect 5-0 in the NCAC. The Bishops dropped back to 5-8 and 2-4 in league action.
Oberlin is back in action on Saturday as it hosts Kenyon College at 12 p.m. Prior to the match, the team will honor its senior class.
