Oberlin, Ohio — Despite the strong performances by Oberlin College senior midfielders
Sydney Garvis and
Natalie Rauchle on Senior Day, the Kenyon College Ladies prevailed 16-14 on Bailey Field Saturday afternoon.
The senior duo of Garvis and Rauchle accounted for 11 of the Yeowomen goals as Rauchle led the way with six and Garvis tallied five. Rauchle, who leads the conference in points-per-game, also added a pair of assists to bring her career points total to 235.
After an early goal for Kenyon, the Yeowomen scored the next three to take a 3-1 lead when Rauchle took advantage of a foul inside the 8-meter mark less than 10 minutes into the game. The Ladies answered back with three more scores to take a 4-3 lead when Avery Morgan - who netted a team-high five goals on the day - buried her first tally of the game with 18:40 on the clock.
Both teams netted three goals each in the final 18 minutes of the first half, giving Kenyon a 7-6 lead at the intermission, despite Oberlin generating two great scoring chances late in the first.
Hayley Drapkin's shot with 1:13 on the clock was denied by Kenyon's Allie Dumas and Garvis' attempt as time expired sailed just wide of the top-left corner.
After the break, the Yeowomen scored three of the next four goals to regain the lead when
Leah Crowther took advantage of a free-position attempt at the 26:07 mark. After both team's scored a goal, Garvis buried her fifth of the game to make it 10-9. After the goal, Kenyon's Head Coach Jess Fugate put in back-up goalkeeper Carina Barnes, which would change the course of the game.
The Ladies went on a 4-0 run and took a 13-10 lead when Morgan found the back of the net with 14:09 left. Oberlin fought its way within one when Garvis floated a pass to
Kyra Aviles to make it 15-14 with 4:51 left in the game. The Ladies answered back 50 seconds later and won the final draw of the contest to end the Yeoowomen's late comeback hopes.
First-year goalie
Maranda Phillips made her first-career start for the Yeowomen and stood her ground as she finished the day with eight saves. Barnes earned the victory for Kenyon as she made four key saves in the final 18:17 of the game.
The stat sheet was pretty even as the Yeowomen controlled the draw, winning 20-of-32 as Garvis led the way with nine draw controls and Rauchle added eight. The Kenyon defense stifled the Yeowomen offense all afternoon as they caused 14 turnovers and shut down the Oberlin transition game as it finished just 13-of-19 on the clear.
The loss snaps a five-game winning streak for the Yeowomen and drops them to 9-4 on the year and 5-1 in NCAC play. Kenyon improves to 10-5 overall and is 4-3 in conference play.
The Yeowomen look to rebound next week as they have a pair of NCAC road games on the schedule to wrap-up the regular season. Oberlin faces Hiram College on Wednesday evening (7 p.m.) and then travels to Denison University for a rematch of last year's conference championship game Saturday afternoon (1 p.m.).
