Hot Start Propels Scots Over Yeomen

Wooster, Ohio – The Oberlin men's lacrosse team suffered a 19-11 defeat at The College of Wooster on Friday evening.

The Scots got off to a hot start, scoring nine first-quarter goals to set the tone early as they cruised to victory. The loss dropped the Yeomen back to 5-5 overall and 0-3 in the NCAC while Wooster moved to 7-3 and 3-0 in league action.

Senior John Sutherland netted a career-high five goals, while Reese Koburov added three scores in the setback.

It was a 4-0 Scots' lead before the Yeomen got on the board courtesy of a Will Prangley goal at the 8:19 mark of the first quarter. Koburov would cash in his first score of the game to make it 6-2, but the Scots would ultimately lead 9-2 after 15 minutes of action.

Prangley would assist on a man-up goal by Steve Kelleher with 10:31 left to play in the second quarter and Sutherland would find the back of the cage three minutes later to make it 12-4, but Wooster would ultimately carry a 16-4 cushion into the intermission.

Oberlin would outscore Wooster 7-3 in the second half, but it was too little too late to have any impact on the final result of the match.

Sutherland would score twice in the third quarter - including once during a man-up opportunity – before adding two more tallies in the fourth. Koburov added two second-half goals, while Ian McCague also notched his 12th goal of the season.

The Scots ended with a 47-36 margin in shots, including a 28-23 edge in shots on goal. However, the Yeomen had a 38-26 advantage in ground balls and won 21 of the game's 33 face-offs. Max McAllister was 19-of-26 on the draw and secured a team-high 10 ground balls.

Sophomore goalie Calvin Filson made nine saves for the Yeomen.

The Yeomen are back in action on Saturday, April 7 as they host No. 8 Denison at 2:30 p.m.
