Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's lacrosse team gave the visiting Wittenberg University Tigers all they could handle, but in the end the Yeomen finished on the wrong end of a 14-8 scoreline.
Reese Koburov and
Steve Kelleher cashed in two goals each to lead the Yeomen attack, while sophomore goalie
Calvin Filson posted his third straight game with double-digit saves as he made 10 stops on the afternoon.
The Tigers cashed in the game's first two goals, but Oberlin would get back to even on a goal by
Ian McCague and a man-up finish from
Jay Messina off a feed from
Regan Chasney. Both teams would score once more before the first-quarter horn with Oberlin's coming in dramatic fashion as Jonah Danzinger heaved the ball three-quarters of the field into the goal to square the match at 3-3.
The Tigers established control in the second quarter, outscoring the Yeomen 5-2 in the period.
Tom Decker's laser shot evened the count at 4-4 less than two minutes in, but the Tigers would go on to score the game's next four goals. Kelleher would register his first tally of the game to make it an 8-5 game at the half.
The defense for both sides buckled down in the third quarter as each team tallied just one goal with the Oberlin tally coming courtesy of Koburov.
Koburov would also strike first in the fourth quarter to cut the Tigers' lead down to 9-7 with 9:48 left on the clock. However, Wittenberg would respond with four consecutive goals to put the game out of reach. Kelleher finished off a pass from Messina with 2:48 left to play, but it was too little too late for the Yeomen.
Shots were even at 37 each, while the Tigers had a slight 31-29 edge in ground balls. Both teams were successful on 14 clears with the Tigers earning two more chances with 20 compared to Oberlin's 18. Both sides struggled on the man-advantage as Wittenberg ended 2-of-6 compared the Yeomen's 1-of-9.
Max McAllister won 11-of-24 face-offs and matched
Daniel Pardee with a team-high four ground balls.
The Yeomen are back in action on Tuesday night as they host Otterbein University at 7:00 p.m.
