Tucson, AZ – The Oberlin College baseball team erupted for 17 hits in a 9-3 win over Hamline University, but a late-inning rally from Carroll University propelled them to a 9-5 win in game two on Monday afternoon.
The Yeomen offense came to life with 28 hits on the day with senior
Milo Sklar and sophomore
Amari Newman leading the way. A native of Brooklyn, New York, Sklar roped six hits and drove in three runs, while Newman went 5-for-9 with three runs scored.
The Yeomen jumped on the Pipers right from the start as Sklar hit the second pitch of the game over the wall in left center to stake Oberlin to an early advantage. Hamline answered back with a single tally of its in own in the home half of the inning, but Oberlin responded in a big way.
Back-to-back two-out RBI triples by
Sam Harris and Sklar plated a pair of runs before rookie
Lawrence Hamilton beat out an infield single that allowed Sklar to trot home for a 4-1 lead.
Sklar, who had three RBIs in the game, drove in the first run of the frame with a hard-hit single through the hole on the left side before classmate
Quin Butler brought in the second run of the inning on a fielder's choice.
Oberlin would tack on another pair of runs in the fifth on a run-scoring single through the left side by
Brendan Mapes, and an error by the Pipers to make it an 8-1 Yeomen advantage. Mapes would later leadoff the seventh with his first home run of the season as he lifted a 2-2 pitch over the wall in left field to cap the game's scoring for the Yeomen.
Junior
Noah Gear earned the win on the bump as he tossed six innings, allowing just two hits to accompany his four strikeouts.
Musa Matiwane finished off the victory as he registered the final eight outs with three coming on strikeouts.
Sklar and
Ian Dinsmore each had three hits in the nightcap but it wasn't enough as the Pioneers put together a late rally to secure the victory.
The game was tied at 4-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh but a key Yeomen error extended the inning and Oberlin paid the ultimate price as Ethan Burns roped a two-out bases-clearing triple to the gap in right center and he would then trot home on a double to left center by Jacob Langford.
The Yeomen would push a run across in the eighth but could get no closer the rest of the way.
Oberlin posted a single run in every inning between the third and sixth to tie the game. Hamilton had an RBI ground out in the third, while Mapes lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Dinsmore in the fourth. Harris would score the game-tying run in the fifth as he raced home from third while Sklar was stuck in a rundown between first and third.
First-year
Asher Mitchell made his first-career start and lasted 3.2 innings, allowing six hits and four runs to accompany his three strikeouts.
Oberlin is back action tomorrow with a doubleheader against Carleton College. First pitch of game one is set for 10 a.m. MST.
