Gambier, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team put forth a strong effort on both ends of the floor, earning a 78-63 victory over the Kenyon College Lords on Wednesday night at Tomsich Arena.
A total of 11 Yeomen appeared in the scoring column with sophomore
Christian Fioretti leading the way with 14 points. The Menlo Park, California, native also added six assists, four rebounds and three steals. Classmate
Andre Campbell was a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor as he contributed 13 points, while sophomore
Joshua Friedkin and freshman
Ben Rosow chipped in with nine points each.
Midway through the opening half, a triple-hit from Rosow put Oberlin out in front 17-16 and classmate
Wolf Moser would later tie it at 21 with 8:22 left to play in the frame. The Yeomen would hold the Lords to just three points for the remainder of the frame as they built up a 12-point lead heading into the intermission with a 36-24 advantage. A string of five points by Friedkin gave Oberlin its first double-digit cushion of the game and Campbell would later cap the first-half scoring with a jumper.
With 12:43 left in the second half, a put-back layup from
Charles Tiedemann gave the Yeomen their first 20-point lead of the game at 49-29. Oberlin swelled the difference out to 28 at the 7:37 mark as a layup from Fioretti made it 63-35.
With the outcome never in doubt, both teams turned to their reserves down the stretch. The Lords kept fighting to get the margin down to 14, but they would get no closer the rest of the way.
Patrick Smith led the Yeomen taxi squad with five points in just four minutes.
The Yeomen shot a blistering 56.7 percent (34-of-60) from the floor, but did struggle from long range as they were just 3-of-17 (17.6%) from beyond the arc. Kenyon, who got a game-high 21 points from Matt Shifrin, checked in at 40 percent shooting with 26 makes on 65 shots.
Oberlin turned 19 Kenyon turnovers into 23 points. The Yeomen also outscored the Lords 52-34 in the paint and had a 39-26 edge in bench points.
The victory moved Oberlin's record to 10-12 overall and 4-11 in the NCAC. Kenyon fell back to 6-16 and 3-12 in league action.
Oberlin will look to complete the season series sweep of Wabash College on Saturday afternoon. Tip-time is set for 3 p.m. with the annual Teddy Bear Toss to follow at halftime.
