14 Players Score in Men's Lacrosse Season-Opening Victory

Adrian, MI — The Oberlin College men's lacrosse team cruised to a 19-3 victory in its season opener against the Adrian College Bulldogs.

The Oberlin offense was on full display as 14 players scored for the Yeomen.  First-year Tom Decker highlighted the day with his first-career hat trick as he finished with six points on three goals and three assists. Senior Steve Kelleher also recorded a hat trick as he accounted for three of Oberlin's points. Jay Messina and Jack Stevens tied Decker with three assists a piece.

Oberlin's revamped offense outshot Adrian 52-20 and put 32 of its shots on cage. The Yeomen also won the battle of the ground balls (40-19) and the face-off spot (21-5) behind first-year face-off specialist Max McAllister, who won 18-of-21.

The Yeomen got off to strong start in 2018 as they shutout the Bulldogs in the first frame, 5-0. Steve Kelleher and Jay Messina buried their first goals of the season and first-year players Thomas Berle Carman, Joey Edell and Tom Decker netted their first collegiate goals in the period. Decker's goal off the feed from classmate Jack Stevens closed the scoring at the 2:41 mark.

Oberlin extended its lead to 6-0 when Kelleher netted his second unassisted goal of the game with 13:53 on the clock. Both teams scored a pair of goals to close out the first half giving the Yeomen an 8-2 edge at halftime. The pair of Oberlin goals came off the stick of John Sutherland (9:06) and Decker (5:10).

Out of the break, Adrian cut the Yeomen lead back to five, 8-3, but Oberlin blew it open as they scored the final 11 goals of the contest. Griffin Cappelletti, McAllister and Alec Palmiotti each scored their first career goals before the final horn.

Sophomore goalkeeper Calvin Filson was challenged 20 times and made seven saves.
