Yeomen Fall to No. 6 Wittenberg in NCAC Quarterfinals

Springfield, Ohio – The eighth-seeded Oberlin College Yeomen battled the top-seeded Wittenberg University Tigers, who rank No. 6 in the country, but fell by a score of 70-54 at Pam Evans Smith Arena.

Eli Silverman-Lloyd led the Yeomen with 16 points as he knocked down 7-of-13 (53.85%) shots and was 2-of-6 from beyond the arc. Sophomore guard Christian Fioretti joined Silverman-Lloyd in double figures with 11 and also dished out a team-high five assists. First-year Isaac Finestone chipped eight and Andre Campbell grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

In the first half, Wittenberg led for the entire first half and built its lead up to 11, 26-15, at the 6:25 mark, but the Yeomen answered with a 16-7 run to close out the session. Joshua Friedkin's two made free throws with six seconds left in the frame made it a one score game, 33-31, heading into the intermission.

The Tigers extended their lead out to 15 at 54-39 as they held the Yeomen to just eight points in the first 10 minutes in the second half. The Yeomen continued to fight and cut the Wittenberg advantage to 58-51 when first-year big-man Jordan Armstrong finished at the rim with 6:35 left to play, but the relentless Tigers' offensive attack was too much for Oberlin down the stretch.

Oberlin struggled shooting as they made 37.7 percent (20-of-53) of its shots from the field and were 5-of-21 (23.81%) from 3-point land. The No. 6 ranked Tigers shot at a 44.3% (27-of-61) clip and were 9-of-10 (90.0%) from the charity stripe. Wittenberg also won the turnover battle, 16-11, and grabbed eight more offensive rebounds than the Yeomen, 9-1.

The Yeomen finish the season with a record of 12-14 overall and 6-12 in the NCAC. The future is bright for the Oberlin as they return their whole roster that quadrupled its overall win total and tripled its conference wins from 2016-17.
