Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team took to the newly-finished floor at Philips Gym for the first time this season and knocked off the visiting Kenyon College Lords by a score of 84-69 on Wednesday night.
Senior
Eli Silverman-Lloyd turned in his best performance of the season, scoring 17 of his season-high 24 points in the first half. The Culver City, California, native finished 10-of-15 from the floor and added eight assists in the win. Sophomore
Isaac Finestone added a career-best 17 points off the bench and pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds for his first-career double-double.
Oberlin's junior backcourt duo of
Christian Fioretti (12/4) and
Joshua Friedkin (10/5) combined for 22 points and nine assists.
The Yeomen held a 15-12 lead just over four minutes into the game but would create some separation with an 11-0 run that featured two of Silverman-Lloyd's four triple-hits on the night to make it a 26-12 count with 12:59 left on the clock.
Later in the half the Lords had the deficit down to nine, 39-30, but back-to-back threes from Friedkin and Finestone ballooned the lead back out to 15 and the Yeomen would ultimately carry a 49-36 cushion into the intermission.
In the second half the Yeomen were never threatened but the Lords wouldn't go away without a fight. Oberlin was clinging to a 75-65 margin with 5:07 left on the clock but less than two minutes later the Yeomen lead got pushed out to 17 on an acrobatic steal by Fioretti that resulted in a fastbreak layup for Silverman-Lloyd to put an exclamation point on the victory.
The Yeomen shot a blistering 59.3 percent from the floor, hitting on 35-of-59 shots, which included an 8-of-19 (42.1%) showing from beyond the arc. Oberlin also won the battle of the boards, 40-22, and outscored the Lords 50-20 in the paint. Furthermore, the Yeomen bench bunch bested its Kenyon counterparts by a 29-9 margin.
With the win, the Yeomen moved to 3-3 on the year and 2-1 in the NCAC. The Lords dropped back to 0-8 and 0-3 in the NCAC.
Oberlin is back in action on Saturday afternoon at DePauw University. Tip-time is set for 3 p.m.
