Late Yeomen Push Falls Short at Caltech

Pasadena, CA — Isaac Finestone's 3-point attempt as time expired went off the backboard and bounced off the front of the rim, allowing the Caltech Beavers to hang on for a 70-68 victory on Saturday afternoon.

Highlighting the day was senior Eli Silverman-Lloyd as he led all scorers with 19 points off the bench, hitting on seven of his 10 shots, including a 5-of-6 showing from beyond the arc. The other two Oberlin players in double figures were Andre Campbell (13) and Finestone (11). Joshua Friedkin registered a team-high seven rebound and six assists.

Both teams were feeling each other out early, but the Yeomen took the first significant advantage when Charles Tiedemann finished at the rim with 14:37 on the clock to give the Yeomen a 12-6 lead. A 10-3 run by the Beavers capped by a Stephen Hei three would give the home team a 16-15 lead at the 12:10 mark.

After some back and forth play, Caltech would be the ones to string together some baskets, taking its largest lead of the half, 36-27, on a Gokul Srini trey with 4:51 left. With less than a minute to go in the session, a Finestone 3-pointer and a transition layup by Christian Fioretti shaved the Beavers' lead to just four, 41-37, with 38 ticks left to expire. On the final possession of the half for the Beavers, Alec Andrews made jumper while falling to hardwood to send the home team into the locker room with a 43-37 lead.

In the second half of play, the Beavers would lead by as many as 11, but down the stretch Caltech went cold giving the Yeomen an opportunity for a win late. Trailing 70-61 with 3:36 left in regulation, the Yeomen went on a 7-0 run including two clutch free throws off the finger tips of Campbell with 12 seconds on the clock to cut the gap down to two. A Caltech missed free throw led to the last-second shot by Finestone as time expired.

The Beavers shot 48.3 percent (28-for-58) and Oberlin finished 23-for-54 (42.6 percent) from the field. Caltech also won the battle on the boards, 34-32, and forced 12 Yeomen turnovers.

The 1-1 Yeomen will look to bounce back when they return to Ohio and open conference play on Wednesday night at Denison University. The conference clash is set to start at 7:30 p.m.
