Volleyball Drops Home Finale to DePauw

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team suffered a straight-set loss to the visiting DePauw University Tigers on Saturday afternoon at Philips Gym, falling by the scores of 25-19, 25-16, and 25-11.

The Yeowomen could not get into an offensive rhythm as they hit just .079 in the match with 24 kills against 16 errors.

Lexi Mitchell led the attack with seven kills, snapping a streak of seven matches with double-digit finishes. Sara Chang cracked the 1,000-assist career mark with 10 assists in the match. Samantha Lam also chipped in with nine helpers to accompany her team-high 12 digs. Emily Kelkar matched Mitchell with nine digs in the setback.

The opening set was tied at 11 in the early going, but the Tigers used a 4-0 burst to create some separation. After falling behind by as many as seven points, Oberlin fought back to within three at 21-18, but would get no closer the rest of the way.

The Yeowomen and Tigers were even at 9-9 in the second set before DePauw ripped off an 8-1 run to make an Oberlin comeback bid highly unlikely. The third game was never close as the Tigers built up a 13-3 advantage and never looked back.

DePauw registered 40 kills in the triumph, hitting .283 as team along the way. Suzanne Peters led the visitors with 14 kills in the victory to help run the Tigers record to 14-8 overall and 6-1 in the NCAC. Oberlin fell back to 7-14 and 1-6 in league action.

Oberlin will conclude the regular season on Wednesday night at Allegheny. The first serve is set for 7 p.m.
