Springfield, Ohio — The Oberlin College women's basketball team defeated Wittenberg University, 60-48, to remain unbeaten in North Coast Athletic Conference play at Pam Evans Smith Arena Saturday afternoon.
The Yeowomen remain on top of the conference standings with its 6-0 record and are 8-4 overall. Wittenberg falls to 7-9 on the year and 2-5 against NCAC opponents.
Abby Andrews scored a team-high 13 points and
Anna Moore added eight points as the duo accounted for 21 of the 30 points from the Oberlin bench. Andrews made six of her 10 shots and Moore was 3-of-6 (50.0%) from the field. In addition,
Olivia Canning and
Tyler Collins each contributed seven points. Collins' seven points is a career-high for the first-year guard.
Canning scored the first basket of the game on the opening possession to give the Yeowomen an early 2-0 lead. After two minutes and 39 seconds of scoreless basketball, the game would go back and forth and the Tigers would sustain their first lead at the 4:16 mark off a trey by Delaney Williams. The Yeowomen got the lead right back with 3:32 on the clock and went on a 7-2 run that was capped off when Andrews finished at the basket with one tick on the clock to give Oberlin a 13-9 lead at the end of the first.
In the second stanza, the Yeowomen outscored Wittenberg 5-4 early in the period as
Tyler Parlor knocked down a jumper to make it 18-13 at the 7:39 mark. Collins made a shot as time expired in the half to cap off a 13-6 run by Oberlin, giving them a commanding 31-19 lead at the intermission.
The Yeowomen extended their lead to 14, 40-26, when Moore made a pair of free throws at the 4:43 mark. Wittenberg made a 10-4 run to cut the Oberlin cushion to 44-36, but another buzzer-beater for the Yeowomen by
Cheyenne Arthur put them back up by double figures heading into the fourth.
Oberlin took the momentum from Arthur's buzzer beater and extended its lead to 56-39 as
Jasmine Sorrells made a layup with 6:16 left in the game. The Tigers outscored Oberlin 9-4 in the final six minutes, but the outcome was never in doubt.
Oberlin made 26-of-56 (46.4%) of its shots from the field and was 2-of-8 (25.0%) from beyond the arc while shooting 50% (6-of-12) from the charity stripe. Wittenberg was 20-of-63 (31.7%) from the field, 2-of-19 (10.5%) from outside the arc and 6-of-7 (85.7%) from the foul line.
The Yeowomen will host Kenyon College in its first home game in almost a month on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
