Yeowomen Comeback Bid Falls Short Versus Kenyon

Oberlin, Ohio – Despite a 17-2 run in the fourth quarter, the Oberlin College women's basketball team fell to the visiting Kenyon College Ladies, 71-61, at Philips Gym on Wednesday night.

The Yeowomen were led by Alex Stipano who scored a team-high 15 points on 4-of-9 shooting from three-point land with all four of her treys coming in the late Yeowomen run. Stipano was accompanied by Olivia Canning and Ally Driscoll in double figures. Canning contributed 14 points and Driscoll tacked on 11 for Oberlin.

In the first quarter, Oberlin earned a 15-8 lead when Anna Moore knocked down a jumper with 2:37 on the clock. The Ladies outscored the Yeowomen 8-2 in the remainder of the period to take a 19-17 lead into the second.

After some back and forth action for the first seven minutes of the quarter, Kenyon went on a 10-1 run to give them a 38-27 lead with 36 seconds left in the half. Canning finished a traditional three-point play off with a make from the charity stripe with five ticks to cut the Ladies lead to 38-30 before halftime.

Out of the intermission, the Ladies would extend their lead to 15 as they outscored Oberlin 17-10 in the period, which set the stage for the Yeowomen comeback.

After Kenyon opened the stanza with a basket, Oberlin went on its 17-2 run, cutting the Ladies lead to two, 59-57, when Stipano hit her fourth three of the night at the 4:52 mark. The Oberlin momentum was short lived though as the Ladies outscored the Yeowomen 12-4 in the remainder of regulation to secure the victory.

Oberlin outshot Kenyon as it converted on 48.9% (22-of-45) of its attempts from the field and hit 4-of-11 (36.4%) from beyond the arc. The Ladies shot 45.2% (28-of-62) from the floor and were 10-of-22 (45.5%) from 3-point range.

With the first conference blemish of the year Yeowomen fall to 6-1 in NCAC and 8-5 overall. The Ladies improve to 6-1 in league play and are 13-3 on the season.

The Yeowomen host No. 9 ranked DePauw on Saturday for a 1 p.m. start.
