Yeomen Edge Little Giants in Overtime

Crawfordsville, IN – Sophomore guard Christian Fioretti hit two free throws with 4.3 seconds left in overtime to lift the Oberlin College men's basketball team to a thrilling 66-65 victory at Wabash College on Saturday afternoon.

Trailing by one, the Yeomen drew up a play for Andre Campbell, but his initial shot was off the mark. However, Fiorretti was there for the rebound and was fouled on his put-back attempt. After rolling in the first to tie the game, Wabash called timeout to draw up its final play while also attempting to ice the Yeomen guard.

After Fioretti swished the second to put Oberlin out in front, Jack Davidson raced down the court and got a strong look from 17 feet out on the far wing, but his potential game-winning attempt at the buzzer was too strong as Oberlin was able to hang on for its first North Coast Athletic Conference win of the season.

The Yeomen trailed 60-56 with 1:12 left to play in regulation, but four straight free throws from Campbell and Eli Silverman-Lloyd would tie the game to force the extra session.

Oberlin scored the first four points of overtime, but Wabash would go out in front 65-64 on a pair of Connor Rotterman charity tosses with 14 seconds to go to setup the thrilling finish.

Silverman-Lloyd led all scorers with 21 points, while Campbell added 14 points to accompany his seven rebounds. Joshua Friedkin completed Oberlin's trio in double-figures as he chipped in with 10 points.

The game was tied at 17 with 6:41 left in the opening half, but the Little Giants used a 9-0 run to create some separation. However, Silverman-Lloyd would close the half with four straight points, but the Little Giants still led 29-23 at the intermission.

Oberlin trailed 38-30 early in the second half, but the Yeomen would cash in three-straight 3-pointers with Friedkin book-ending a triple-hit from Fioretti to give the Yeomen a 39-38 edge at the 14:22 mark.

The Little Giants would regroup and reclaim a 52-45 lead with 6:30 left to play, but the Yeomen would not go away without fight. Silverman Lloyd's lone long-range connection of the game shrunk the Wabash advantage to 57-56 with 1:52 left to play and ultimately allowed Oberlin to force overtime.

Oberlin shot 39.7 percent (25-of-63) from the floor while Wabash checked in at 32.3 percent (20-of-62)

With the win, the Yeomen moved to 7-6 overall and 1-5 in the NCAC. Wabash fell to 6-7 and 2-4 in league play.

Oberlin is back in action on Wednesday night when it welcomes Kenyon College to Philips Gym. Tip-time is set for 8 p.m.
