Oberlin, Ohio — The Oberlin College women's basketball team outscored The College of Wooster Fighting Scots 24-5 in the fourth quarter to earn a 77-55 North Coast Athletic Conference victory at Philips Gym.
The fourth quarter started with the Yeowomen leading 53-50, but Oberlin ballooned its lead with a 11-0 run, 64-50, which was capped off by a jumper by
Tyler Parlor at the 6:06 mark. The Fighting Scots would cut it to 68-55 at the 3:35 mark, but the Yeowomen defense did not allow Wooster to score the remainder of the game. Oberlin shot 8-of-13 (61.5%) in the period compared to the 14.3 percent (2-of-14) success rate for Wooster.
Leading the way on the stat sheet was
Olivia Canning as she registered her fifth double-double of the season with a season-high 21 points and 11 rebounds. The junior from Sudbury, Massachusetts, was just three blocks shy of a triple-double as she finished with seven rejections. Joining Canning in double figures was
Abby Andrews and
Alex Stipano. Andrews scored a season-high 22 points on 9-of-15 (60.0%) shooting and Stipano made three of the five made treys for the Yeowomen to finish with 13 points. Off the bench,
Jasmine Sorrells had another strong performance with 10 rebounds and five blocks.
In the first quarter, Oberlin sustained an early 10-2 lead when
Ally Driscoll finished at the rim with 6:19 left in the first quarter. The Fighting Scots methodically worked their way back into the game as a Kyle Croxton three made it 18-16 with 21 ticks left in the period. Wooster made 4-of-6 (66.7%) of its shots from beyond the arc in the first stanza.
Wooster scored the first four points of the second to earn its first lead of the contest when Sarah Rapacz made a layup at the 9:56 mark. The Fighting Scots extended their lead to five, 33-28, with 59 seconds left, but a Stipano three cut it to 33-31. Wooster's Akwia Tilton split a pair at the foul line to close out the scoring and give the Fighting Scots a 34-31 lead at the intermission.
After the break, Stipano hit another three to tie it at 34 and the Yeowomen would lead the remainder of the period with their largest lead coming at, 50-41, when Andrews laid the ball in with 3:02 on the clock. Wooster went on a 9-3 run to close out the period and make it 53-50 heading into the fourth.
Oberlin shot at a 45.9 percent (28-of-61) clip and were just 5-of-16 (31.3%) from three-point land. Wooster finished the day shooting 33.3 percent (21-of-63) and were 9-of-24 (37.5%) from beyond the arc.
Oberlin, who extends its winning streak to six, ties a school record for conference wins in a season as they improve to 10-2 and are 14-6 overall.
The Yeowomen will travel to Alfred, New York on Saturday to face the Alfred University Saxons at 3 p.m.
