Alfred, NY – The Oberlin College women's basketball team wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule, defeating the Alfred University Saxons, 72-46, on Saturday afternoon.
Four of Oberlin's five starters reached double figures with senior
Tyler Parlor leading the way with a season-high 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor and a 5-of-6 performance at the charity stripe. Classmate
Abby Andrews notched her second double-double of the year with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while
Jasmine Sorrells and
Alex Stipano also matched her with 11 points.
The Yeowomen held the Saxons to just 28.1 percent shooting as they went 18-of-64 from the floor, which included a 1-of-12 (8.3%) showing from beyond the arc. Oberlin checked in at 41 percent, hitting on 25-of-61 shots.
Midway through the opening quarter, the Yeowomen built up a 14-2 lead and would go up by as many as 13 before settling for a 20-9 margin after 10 minutes of play.
The Saxons bounced back in the second quarter, out-scoring Oberlin 20-16 in the stanza, but the Yeowomen still held a 36-29 lead at the break.
The third quarter was a much different story as Oberlin held Alfred to just six points in the frame. One of Stipano's three triple-hits in the game increased the Yeowomen lead out to 51-31 with 4:34 left in the quarter and Oberlin ultimately carried a 57-35 cushion into the final frame.
Late in the final quarter, four straight points from first-year
Tyler Collins increased the advantage out to 70-30 while classmate
Kayla Small closed out the scoring with a fastbreak layup.
With the win, Oberlin tied the single-season wins record as it moved to 15-6 overall. The Saxons fell back to 2-17.
The Yeowomen will be aiming for revenge on Wednesday night when it travels to Kenyon College for a key NCAC clash at 6 p.m. In the first match-up this season, the Ladies got the best of the Yeowomen, earning a 71-61 win at Philips Gym.
