Hiram, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat the Hiram College Terriers, 56-52, on Wednesday night at Price Gymnasium.
With the win, the Yeowomen have swept the season series against the Terriers as they remained unblemished in North Coast Athletic Conference play, moving to 5-0 on the season.
Alex Stipano scored all of her team-high 12 points in the second half, while junior classmate
Olivia Canning scored eight of 11 points after the intermission to spearhead the Oberlin comeback.
Maggie Gross and
Tyler Collins, who made appearances in the Yeowomen's starting lineup, added six points each, while senior tri-captain
Anna Moore also chipped in with six off the bench.
The Yeowomen began the comeback with a 9-2 run out of the half that was capped off by a made free throw by Collins to cut the Terriers lead to 36-33. Hiram scored the next four points of the contest, but a pair of treys from Stipano cut the Terriers lead back down to three, 42-39, with 1:01 left in the quarter. A pair of made shots from the charity stripe in the final minute gave Hiram a 44-39 edge heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
Oberlin scored the first two baskets of the final period to tie the game up at 44 and after some back and forth play the game was knotted at 46 with 5:52 on the clock. Hiram would go up four with 3:40 left to expire, but a tip-in by
Tyler Parlor and a three by Stipano gave the Yeowomen its first lead since the 8:04 mark in the first quarter at 51-50 and they would never trail again.
In the first half, Gross cashed in the Yeowomen's first two baskets, but Oberlin trailed the remainder of the opening period. A 12-3 run by the Terriers put them up 16-7 with 1:33 left. Oberlin battled its way to within two scores, 16-12, with less than 20 ticks on the clock, but the Terrier's Jazmine Scot knocked down a three on the final possession of the period to make it 19-12 at the end of the first.
In the second stanza, Hiram extended its lead to 10, 26-16, with 7:26 left in the half off another Scott made three. The rest of the period went back and forth, but the Terriers got the last points of the half when Madison Brach finished a layup as time expired, giving Hiram a 34-24 lead at the break.
The Yeowomen struggled shooting as they went 24-of-64 (37.5%) from the field, 4-of-12 (33.3%) from beyond the arc and 4-of-11 (36.4%) form the charity stripe. Hiram finished the day making 18-of-62 shots from the field, 3-of-14 from downtown and went 13-of-14 from the foul line.
The Yeowomen improves to 7-4 on the year and 5-0 in NCAC play. Hiram falls to 6-9 and is 2-4 in conference.
Oberlin is back in action on Saturday when it travels to Wittenberg for a 1 p.m. start.
