Oberlin, Ohio – With a strong second half, the Oberlin College women's basketball team extended its winning streak to four with a commanding 67-32 non-conference victory over the Kalamazoo College Hornets at Philips Gym.
The Yeowomen offensive was led by the North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week
Alex Stipano who scored a game-high 23 points. The junior sharp shooter made 9-of-19 (47.4%) from the field and converted 4-of-10 (40.0%) of her attempts from beyond the arc. Junior center
Olivia Canning accompanied Stipano in double figures as she finished with 19 points. Senior captain
Abby Andrews grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds and chipped in eight points.
The Yeowomen jumped out to an early eight-point lead, 13-5, when
Tyler Parlor finished at the rim with
5:48 on the clock. The Hornets cut the lead to 13-11 off a made jumper by Danielle Simon with
3:57 left in the opening period. Each team made a pair of layups, but Parlor made a free throw at the
1:17 mark to put the Yeowomen up 16-13 at the end of the first.
Kalamazoo gained its first lead of the ball game on its second possession of the second quarter and built up a 19-16 advantage at the
8:36 mark. Outscoring the Hornets 5-2 in a three minute stretch, the Yeowomen regained the lead for good when Stipano knocked down a trey with
5:05 left in the period, making it 23-21. In the final five minutes, Stipano would score seven more points and Andrews buried a jumper getting the Oberlin lead back up to seven, 32-25, at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Yeowomen pulled away as they held Kalamazoo scoreless for the first
4:45. With good defense, they built the lead up to 17 points, 50-33, when
Jasmine Sorrells made a pair of shots from the charity stripe with
1:43 left. The Hornets would make a free throw to make it 50-34 heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
The outcome of the game was never in doubt in the fourth as Oberlin outscored Kalamazoo 17-2 in the quarter. The Yeowomen made the most of their opportunities as eight of their points came from inside the paint and four were off of Hornet turnovers.
Looking at the stat sheet, Oberlin shot 39.4% (26-of-66) from the field and was 11-of-14 (78.9%) from the charity stipe. In addition, the Yeowomen scored 36 points in the paint and 14 points off of Kalamazoo turnovers. The Hornets shot at a 21.2% (11-of-66) success rate and made 7-of-12 from the foul line.
Oberlin improves to 12-6 on the year and Kalamazoo falls to 6-12.
The Yeowomen look to keep their winning streak alive on Saturday at Ohio Wesleyan. The opening tip is set for
1 p.m.
