Yeowomen Top Tomcats

Greenville, PA – The Oberlin College women's basketball team earned its 11th win of the season, knocking off the Thiel College Tomcats, 80-56, on Monday night at Beeghly Gymnasium.

The Yeowomen used a diverse attack as 11 players made a mark in the points ledger. Just hours after being named as the NCAC Player of the Week, junior Alex Stipano went out and led all scorers with 20 points. Olivia Canning added 15 points off the bench on 6-of-7 shooting to go along with five blocks. Abby Andrews registered her third straight double-digit scoring performance with a season-high 14 points.

Oberlin jumped on Thiel right from the opening tip, building a 15-4 lead on a traditional 3-point play by Andrews with 3:53 left in the first quarter. Oberlin led 20-9 at the end of the period and would increase its advantage out to 32-14 with 5:29 left in the half on back-to-back triple-hits from first-year Leo Ross.

The Yeowomen would carry a 37-23 cushion into the intermission and would claim their first 20-point lead midway through the third quarter on a layup from Andrews to make it 49-28 margin. Oberlin led by as many as 23, but the Tomcats closed the quarter strong, shrinking the gap down to 15 at 55-40 heading into the final frame.

The outcome was never in doubt in the fourth quarter as the Yeowomen outscored the Tomcats 25-16 in the session, which was headlined by four long-range makes from Stipano. On the season, Oberlin has outscored its counterparts 279-228 in the fourth quarter.

Oberlin shot 51.8 percent (29-of-56) from the floor and cashed in 14 of the 17 free throws it hoisted for an 82.4 percent success rate. The Tomcats made one third of their shots with 20 deposits on 60 attempts. The Yeowomen dished out a season-high 24 assists with senior Tyler Parlor leading the way with six helpers. The Yeowomen bench bunch outscored its counterparts 53-0 in the win.

The victory moved Oberlin's record to 11-6 while the Tomcats dropped back to 3-14.

The Yeowomen will continue their busy three-game week on Wednesday night when Kalamazoo College comes to town. Tip-time is set for 6 p.m.
