Granville, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team defeated the Denison University Big Red, 62-53, on Saturday afternoon to sweep the season series.
Four Yeowomen finished in double figures with junior
Alex Stipano leading all scorers with 17 points. Classmate
Olivia Canning added 16 points off the bench on 7-of-9 shooting to go along with four blocks.
Abby Andrews ended one rebound shy of registering her second straight double-double as she dropped in 12 points to accompany her nine boards, while fellow senior co-captain
Tyler Parlor chipped in with 10 points.
Oberlin trailed 45-44 heading into the fourth quarter, but the Yeowomen outscored the Big Red 18-8 in the frame to come away with the victory. The stanza started with a corner three from Stipano to put the Yeowomen out in front and they would never trail again.
The Big Red would tie the game at 51 with 4:36 to play, but the Yeowomen would cash in on their next three trips down the floor to push the cushion to seven at 58-51. Stipano dialed in another long-range strike prior to finishes in the paint from Canning and Andrews to effectively put the game away.
The first 30 minutes of action was nip and tuck throughout as no more than six points separated the two foes. The Big Red led 6-3 in the early going, but a 7-0 Yeowomen spurt that featured five points from Canning had Oberlin ahead by four. The Yeowomen would ultimately lead by the same spread at the end of the first, holding a 16-12 edge.
Oberlin cooled off in the second quarter as the Big Red was able to reclaim the lead. A 3-pointer from Brittany Atkinson put them up 26-22 with 3:23 left in the quarter. Denison would extend its cushion out to six, but
Jasmine Sorrells scored the final points of the half to make it a 30-26 Big Red advantage at the break.
The Big Red led throughout the third quarter, holding leads of six points on multiple occasions. A
Maggie Gross jumper from the key tied the game at 40 at the 2:19 mark, but a mini 5-0 burst by the Big Red created some separation. However, Canning would record the final four points of the period to cut the lead down to just one while setting the stage for the fourth-quarter comeback.
Oberlin's defense held Denison to just 32.4 percent shooting (24-of-74) and registered a season-high 13 blocked shots. The Yeowomen, who shot 44.4 percent (24-of-74) won the rebounding war 46-38 and outscored the Big Red 36-28 in the paint.
Oberlin moved to 10-6 overall and 8-2 in the NCAC. The Big Red fell to 8-10 and 3-6 in league play.
The Yeowomen have a quick turnaround as they step out of conference and travel to Thiel College on Monday night. Tip-time is set for 7 p.m.
