Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team won its home opener on day one of the Oberlin Invite in the Phillips Gymnasium.
After losing the first set, the Yeowomen won the next three by scores of 25-17, 25-10 and 27-25.
Leading the way for Oberlin was senior middle hitter
Dana Thomas as she tallied a team-high 15 kills and seven blocks. Along with Thomas, sophomore
Maura Gibbs recorded 13 kills. Orchestrating the offense was sophomore setter
Samantha Lam as she finished the day with a season-high 44 assists.
Defensively, sophomore
Lexi Mitchell and Lam led the team with 13 digs each. Defensive specialists
Emily Kelkar and
Lola Gatti also cracked double digits in digs. Kelkar tallied 12 and Gatti earned.
In the match-clinching fourth set, Oberlin trailed 25-24, but a key block by Mitchell and Thomas extend the game and returned the serve to Thomas. A Mavericks' attack error was followed with a game-ending kill from Mitchell.
The win ran Oberlin's record to 3-2 on the young season, while Mout Aloysius fell to 2-3.
Oberlin is back in action tomorrow on day two of the Oberlin Invite when it starts the day off against Marietta College at 10 a.m. and finish the day versus Defiance College at 4 p.m.
