Field Hockey Drops Overtime Thriller to DePauw

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College field hockey team pushed DePauw University to overtime, but the Tigers would strike early in the extra session to escape town with a 2-1 win over the Yeowomen on Saturday afternoon at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.

Oberlin put forth its best effort of the season and nearly came away with the upset victory. It two matches with the Tigers last season, DePauw outscored the Yeowomen 11-2.

After playing four overtime games a season ago, the 7-on-7 overtime format was familiar to the Yeowomen. Oberlin had any early breakout, but the Tigers defense recovered to short-circuit the threat. On the counterattack, the Tigers would earn a penalty corner. A flurry of shots would follow that were all turned away by Oberlin keeper Kennedy Kline, but eventually Paige Berliner was able to send in the game-winner with the help of a Reilly Bruce assist.

The Yeowomen netted the game's first goal off a perfectly executed penalty corner. Libby Royer would initiate it to Amelia Huang at the top of the arc. Huang would then send it back in toward the middle where Royer was for the redirect goal. For the Columbus, Ohio, native it was her second goal of the season and fifth of her career.

The Tigers would find the equalizer just moments into the second half as Reilly cashed in a corner opportunity.

It would remain 1-1 through all 70 minutes of regulation due in large part to the play of Kline as she made eight of her 16 saves in the second half en route to running her season total to 98.

The loss dropped the Yeowomen back to 1-8 overall and 0-4 in the NCAC. The Tigers moved to 4-3 and 3-1 in league play.

Oberlin has a quick turnaround as it welcomes the Earlham College Quakers to town tomorrow morning for an 11 a.m. affair.
