Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College baseball team opened its season in grand fashion, sweeping the visiting Berea College Mountaineers 12-1 and 17-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Dill Field.
The Yeomen belted out 31 hits on the day, scoring 29 runs. The pitching and defense was equally impressive as the Yeomen staff registered 16 punchouts while their teammates went error free despite extremely high winds throughout the day.
Senior
Brian Carney led the way at the plate, going 5-for-6 with a double, a three-run home run and seven RBI.
Sam Harris also had five hits, scoring five runs while driving in four. The team's top hitter from a year ago,
Ian Dinsmore was 4-for-8, while
Milo Sklar and
Brendan Mapes each added three hits in the sweep.
Junior right-hander
Sean Kiley got the start in game one, going five strong innings, allowing just four hits and one walk to go along with four strikeouts.
The Yeomen staked Kiley to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Dinsmore had a two-run single through the right side. Oberlin would add a single tally in the second on an RBI groundout by Harris.
OC would break the game open in the fourth, tacking on three more runs in the frame. Harris had an RBI single, while Carney ripped an opposite-field two-run double to the gap in left center.
In the fourth the Yeomen put a final stamp on the victory, plating six more runs. The big blow came courtesy of Carney as he lifted a towering three-run home run over the wall in right.
Derek Martin and Sklar also had RBI doubles in the inning.
In the nightcap Oberlin roughed up Berea pitching to the tune of 18 hits, especially starter Josh Wilson who lasted just three innings after allowing 11 runs on 10 hits.
The Yeomen jumped on him for seven runs in the first inning, sending 10 men to the plate. Following an RBI Double by Harris, Dinsmore crushed an opposite-field three-run home run down the right field line for his first-career round-tripper. Mapes would later add a two-run triple and he would score on a groundout by
Mike Masella.
Sophomore southpaw
Zachary Steer made his first collegiate start on the bump and after a first inning that featured two strikeouts, he returned in the second with a 7-0 lead, which would ease the nerves of any pitcher. The craft lefty sat down seven hitters via the strikeout, allowing just five hits over five scoreless innings of work.
Senior
Charlie Goetz struck out the side in his lone inning on the mound, while
Joe Greenberg finished the job as the trio combined for 11 strikeouts in the win.
Oberlin would score in each of the first five innings, adding a single run in the second, three in third, two in the fourth and four in the fifth.
In the third the high winds came into play as Carney skied a ball along the infield that ended up dropping to the right side of the mound for a two-RBI single. The four-run fifth featured a two-run double from sophomore
Connor MacDowell as he collected his first-career hit and RBI.
The Yeomen return to action on Friday afternoon, as they will take on Calvin College (MI) in Westfield, Indiana.
