Westfield, IN – The Oberlin College baseball team picked up a doubleheader sweep of Calvin College on Friday afternoon, winning 10-6 and 3-2 on a cold day at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana.
The Yeomen moved to 4-0 with the victories as Calvin fell to 0-3 on the young season.
Sophomore
David Gaetano got the start in game one, tossing five innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits. He walked two and struck out four to notch his first-career win.
Quin Butler spearheaded the Yeomen's 12-hit effort in game as he went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Brendan Mapes,
Ian Dinsmore, and
Derek Martin also added a pair of hits in the win.
The Yeomen took advantage of some sloppy defense by the Knights in the second inning as an error and catcher's interference call put two men aboard with nobody out. Butler would then send a single through the left side for the first run of the game and Mapes would follow with a sac fly to make it 2-0.
Oberlin would score in each of the next four innings.
Sam Harris walked and stole second in the third and would score on a two-out single to left field by Dinsmore.
The Yeomen would add three in the fourth and three in the fifth to open up a comfortable lead before the Knights tried to chip away. In the fourth,
Justin Cruz delivered a bases-loaded two-run single and Harris had a sac fly to right that plated Martin.
The first three Yeomen hitters reached base in the fifth and all three would come around to score. Butler found the hole between third and short for the third time to plate Dinsmore. Mapes roped an RBI single to center and Martin sent
Milo Sklar across the dish on a groundout to make it 9-1 Yeomen.
However, the Knights fought back scoring five runs over the final three innings, but Calvin never was able to send the tying run to the plate.
Knights' starter Clay Francisco was dealt the loss as he surrendered six runs (4 four earned) in four innings. He walked two and struck out three in the setback.
Number nine hitter Kyle Hotus led Calvin at the plate, as he was 3-for-3 with two RBI.
In the nightcap, Oberlin posted single tallies in each of the first three innings and made it stand up the rest of the way.
Sophomore transfer
Musa Matiwane got the start in game two and battled through command issues. However, he made big pitches when it mattered most to escape trouble.
He pitched around a leadoff triple to start the game and induced a key 6-4-3 double play with the bases loaded in the third.
However, it was
Jack Reiss who was the standout on the mound in the win as he worked 2.1 innings of scoreless ball, allowing just one hit and one walk while fanning three to secure his first victory of the season.
Cruz started the home half of the first with a triple to the gap in right center and would then trot home on a double by Carney.
Oberlin would manufacture a run in the second as Mapes would get aboard on a two-out single and steal second. He would then score on a Calvin error to make it 2-0.
The Knights would even the score in the top of the third, but Oberlin answered with a response-run in the bottom of the inning that ultimately proved to be the game-winner. Cruz, who was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, started the inning with a double to right center and after getting sacrificed over to third, he would come home on Carney's single through the left side as he served an outside pitch perfectly through the hole.
Reiss was cruising along until the Knights would put the game-tying – and go-ahead runs in scoring position in the sixth. However, sophomore classmate
Noah Gear came on to squash the threat as he struck out Mike Kool and Miles Kuperus to keep Oberlin out in front.
The Yeomen had a chance to add some insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, but a pair of base running miscues short-circuited the opportunity.
Clinging to the one-run lead, Gear would get the first two Calvin hitters in the seventh before issuing a walk. Sklar would then come on to strike out 2016 MIAA First-Team selection Colton Wolfe to end the game.
The Yeomen are currently scheduled to play on Sunday afternoon at Earlham College, but with temperatures in the high 20's those games could be cancelled. Be sure to check the schedule page on goyeo.com for the latest information.
