Stats From the Trip (6 Games)
Tucson, AZ – The Oberlin College baseball team belted out 14 hits to win game one 12-3, but missed opportunities loomed large in the nightcap as the Yellowjackets of UW-Superior salvaged a split with an 8-2 victory in the night cap.
Eight of nine Yeomen starters had at least one hit in game one, spearheaded by the hot bat of freshman
Amari Newman who finished 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
Senior
Brian Carney went 2-for-4 with two-extra base hits and four RBI, while
Sam Harris,
Brendan Mapes, and
Milo Sklar also added two hits apiece in the win.
While the work at the plate was impressive, the effort on the mound from sophomore
Zachary Steer was equally extraordinary. The Conrad, Massachusetts, native tossed 6.1 innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) on six hits. The southpaw hurler walked one and struck out two en route to moving to 2-0 on the season.
The Yellowjackets scratched out a single tally in the bottom of the third for the game's first run, but the Yeomen responded in a big way – plating five runs in the top of the fourth. Carney put the Yeomen out in front with a towering two-run home run that landed in the right-field bullpen at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Newman would later follow with an RBI double to left field. Mapes and Sklar also drove in runs during the rally with Sklar's dropping into right field for a double.
Oberlin would go on to score at least two runs in each of the next three innings to leave no doubt in the eventual outcome.
In the fifth,
Quin Butler had an RBI double that short-hopped the wall in left center. Newman later followed with a run-producing single to center. The three-run sixth featured a two-run double from Carney, while the seventh saw
Justin Cruz drive in a run with a line drive single to left.
In the nightcap the game was in the balance until the final two innings as the YellowJackets roughed up the Yeomen bullpen for seven of their eight runs.
Sophomore
Jack Reiss got the start on the bump and looked good early, but ultimately left after just 3.1 innings as he lost command of the strike zone, issuing four walks.
Oberlin took a 1-0 lead in the home-half of the second as Newman and Mapes delivered back-to-back two-out triples.
Superior would post single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings to grab a brief 2-1 lead. After starting the bottom of the frame with a single, Harris would later score on a Yellowjackets error to tie the game.
After a one-out triple in the sixth, reliever
Charlie Goetz was lifted for
Milo Sklar, but unfortunately he was unable to shut the door, as the YellowJackets would score six runs over the final two innings.
With the game still in the balance in the fourth, the Yeomen had runners at second and third with one out, but could not find the timely hit to take the lead. An inning prior the Yeomen had the bases loaded with two outs and Butler roped a hard hit line drive right at the shortstop to squash the scoring chance.
Harris and Mapes led Oberlin's seven-hit effort with two hits each.
The Yeomen will be back in action tomorrow afternoon with another doubleheader vs. Hamline University. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. EDT.
