Spring Break Stats 8 Games (PDF)
Tucson, AZ – The Oberlin College baseball team earned its first sweep on spring break, defeating Hamline University 8-1 and 15-9 on Tuesday afternoon at the Kino Sports Complex.
The Yeomen have now won three in a row to run their overall mark to 8-4 and sit at 4-4 on the trip with two nine inning games on the docket for Wednesday to complete their time in the desert.
Oberlin pitching surrendered just three hits in the lid-lifter and the offense came alive late with six runs over the final three innings.
Senior
Ben Lovett came on in relief in the second inning for starter
Jack McGowan and stymied the Pipers for 3.2 innings to earn his first win of the season. He allowed just two hits and one run, while fanning two.
Classmate
Charlie Goetz would finish the job, throwing just 28 pitches in 2.1 innings of work while giving up just one hit.
The game's first run came courtesy of the red hot
Brendan Mapes as he lifted a ball over the wall in left for his first-career home run in the top of the second.
In the third,
Justin Cruz rapped a two-out RBI triple to center to score
Brian Carney.
Oberlin would break the game open in the fifth, posting three runs in the inning on an RBI single that landed inside the right field line from
Ian Dinsmore before
Quin Butler came through with a two-run single to center.
The Yeomen would add three runs over the final two innings, which featured an RBI single from
Amari Newman.
It the nightcap the Yeomen belted out 18 hits with all nine position players having at least one hit in the game.
Oberlin led 7-2 after three innings, but the Pipers chipped away and ultimately took a 9-8 lead in the top of the sixth.
However, the Yeomen would not be denied. Butler belted his second-career home run in the home-half of the sixth to tie the game at nine and jumpstart a seven-run inning for the Yeomen.
Oberlin would send 13 hitters to the plate, doing most of its damage with two outs.
Mapes, who increased his hitting streak to 11 games, had three hits and two doubles. Cruz and
Derek Martin also had three hits in the win.
Noah Gear got the win out of the pen, recording the final four outs of the game.
Oberlin will conclude its spring break trip with games against Buena Vista and Kalamazoo College tomorrow.
