Tucson, AZ – The Oberlin College baseball team struggled to find its rhythm on Sunday afternoon, falling 10-3 to Luther College before getting blanked by Buena Vista University, 8-0.
With the losses the Yeomen dropped back to 5-3 on the season and 1-3 on their 10-game trip.
Once again, the Yeomen pitching staff struggled with command issues as they walked 18 hitters and hit three others over the 18 innings of action.
Luther Recap
In the lid-lifter against Norse freshman
Amari Newman highlighted the Yeomen effort as he went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored.
Mike Masella and
Quin Butler each had a pair of hits in the setback.
Sophomore transfer
Musa Matiwane got the start on the bump, but lasted just 3.2 inning innings as he surrendered five runs on three hits, three walks and two hit batters.
Oberlin scored the game's first run in the top of the second as Newman doubled and later scored on an error.
Luther would get back that single tally in the bottom of the frame before erupting for four runs in the third.
However, the Yeomen were far from out of it as they answered back in the fourth, plating a pair to cut the deficit in half at 6-3. Newman led off the inning with his second two-base hit and
Jack Brewster would drive him in for the second time with a double down the left field line. He would later score on a
Justin Cruz infield single that was coupled with a Norse error.
Despite out-hitting the Norse 10-8, the Yeomen would go scoreless the rest of the way while Luther broke the game open with five runs over the next four innings.
Norse starter Teddy Klingsporn scattered eight hits over seven innings to earn the win. The southpaw racked up five strikeouts and did not walk a hitter over seven innings of work that featured 101 pitches.
Ben Lovett,
Noah Lipshie, and
Jack McGowan all made appearances on the mound in relief of Musa.
Buena Vista Recap
The Yeomen got into an early hole against the Beavers and were never able to recover. The nerves were prevalent from freshman starter
Ian Schmitzerle as he was unable to record an out after walking five of the first six hitters of the game.
The command issues coupled with a Yeomen error led to a four-run first for the Beavers.
However, sophomore
Noah Gear was able to stop the bleeding as he worked the next four innings, allowing just two runs while fanning three and walking none.
The Yeomen hitters were kept in check by left-handed starter Jake Lewis as he tossed six innings of scoreless ball, sprinkling eight hits, two walks and two strikeouts.
Oberlin did have seven hits in the game, but it wasn't enough to scratch a run across.
The Yeomen will be back in action tomorrow afternoon, as they take on UW-Superior in a traditional doubleheader at Veterans Memorial Stadium. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. MST/ 6 p.m. EDT.
