Yeowomen Punch Ticket to NCAC Semifinals

Hiram, Ohio - The Oberlin College women's basketball team won its first North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament game since 1999, defeating the fourth-seeded Hiram College Terriers, 60-43, on Tuesday night at Price Gymnasium.

Oberlin, which was seeded fifth in the tournament after finishing in a three-way tie for third place in the conference, will now travel top-seeded DePauw where the semifinals and finals will be held.

The Yeowomen's last tournament win also came when they were the fifth seed as they beat Allegheny College 58-55.

Junior Abby Andrews led the Yeowomen charge as she tied a career-high with 23 points to go along with seven rebounds. Sophomore Olivia Canning added 12 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting. The 6-foot-4 center also added seven blocks and five boards. Alex Stipano chipped in with eight points, while Tyler Parlor added six to accompany her game-high 10 rebounds.

Oberlin jumped on Hiram right from the start, forcing six first-quarter turnovers that allowed them to build a 14-7 lead after one period. A 10-0 Oberlin run had the Yeowomen out in front by double digits, but Mercedes Jones would cash in a long-range straightaway 3-pointer in the closing seconds to cut the deficit to seven.

Oberlin matched its 14-point first quarter with another 14 in the second. A pair of Sarah Thompson free throws at the 5:24 mark gave the Yeowomen a 23-13 advantage. A triple-hit from the nearside wing by Stipano increased the lead out to 11, but Kayla Yost would just barely beat the halftime buzzer to make it a 28-19 game at the intermission.

The Yeowomnen would break it open in the third as an old-fashioned 3-point play from Andrews ballooned the lead to 15, 39-24 with 1:46 left in the frame. Oberlin outscored the Terriers 15-9 in the quarter and led 43-28 heading into the final period.

The eventual outcome was never in doubt as the Terriers would get no closer than 13 points with Oberlin leading by as many as 18 in the fourth quarter.

Oberlin shot an impressive 51.1 percent, hitting 24-of-47 shots in the win. Conversely, the Terriers struggled to find the mark with just 15 makes on 58 attempts for a 25.9 percent success rate. The Yeowomen also won the rebounding battle 36-29.

Oberlin improved its record to 13-13 overall, while Hiram's season comes to an end with a mark of 17-9.

The Yeowomen will get their third shot of the season to take down DePauw. The Tigers beat the Yeowomen in the regular-season finale, 60-41, last Saturday. The semifinal showdown will start at 5 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
