Yeowomen Give DePauw a Scare in NCAC Semifinal

Greencastle, IN - The Oberlin College women's basketball team put forth a valiant effort against No. 12 DePauw, but couldn't quite complete the upset as the Tigers held on for a ,58-54, in the North Coast Athletic Conference Semifinal on Friday evening.

The Tigers entered as the nation's 12th-ranked team and No. 1 seed in the tournament, but the fifth-seeded Yeowomen nearly pulled off the unimaginable.

Sophomore Alex Stipano led the Yeowomen charge with 20 points, while classmate Olivia Canning added 15 points, six rebounds and six blocks to increase her single-season school-record total to 103. Rookie Sarah Thompson had the Oberlin offense in sync as she dished out a career high eight assists in the setback.

Early In the fourth quarter, a layup from Stipano had the Tigers' lead down to 45-40, but DePauw would respond, grabbing a 10-point cushion at 53-43 with 3:58 left on the clock. A layup from Stipano had the margin down to six, 55-49, with 1:46 left to play. She would later add a layup and a 3-pointer to make it a 56-54 game with eight seconds to play, but DePauw's Emily Budde would casually cash in two clutch free throws to put the game away.

The first quarter was a seesaw affair as no more the four points separated the two foes. However, the Tigers would rip off a 16-5 run to open up a 31-18 lead with 2:42 left to play in the first half and they would ultimately take a 33-23 advantage into the intermission.

The Yeowomen would chip away at the double-digit deficit in the third, working their way back to within striking distance as they trailed by just seven, 45-38 heading into the final frame.

Oberlin outshot the Tigers 38.6 percent to 36.5 percent. The Yeowomen cashed in 22-of-57 shots, while the Tigers netted 23 of the 63 attempts they hoisted. DePauw's bench bunch outscored its Oberlin counterparts 30-6, which was spearheaded by Budde's team-high 18 points.

The Yeowomen end their 2016-17 with a record of 13-14 overall. However, the future is bright as they are slated to return the entire roster with the exception of senior Briana Santiago.
